General Discussion / Office liquidators
« on: October 22, 2020, 11:37:08 AM »
With offices downsizing due to Covid, I'm sure there's a glut of used office furniture on the market. What are some good places to find office [furniture] liquidation sales? (Besides obvious places like craigslist.)

COVID-19 Discussion Board / Second Wave length
« on: October 06, 2020, 10:39:56 AM »
How long do you think the second wave in the frum community will last? The first wave seemed to die down after about 6 weeks, but that may have been due to the lockdown which forced infected people to stay home by default. In this wave, it looks like there's a sizable portion of "Covidiots" who mingle with the public even while infected; additionally, the public places (offices, shuls, schools) are open (still with little precautions) this wave, as opposed (generally) to during the first wave/lockdown.

A lockdown this time will likely be ineffective, as the community will quite probably just find loopholes to circumvent (or just completely ignore it).

COVID-19 Discussion Board / Pandemic reaction and personality
« on: May 25, 2020, 11:46:58 PM »
A common refrain from many people who are now relaxing and not following social distancing (partially or completely) is - "you can't live in fear for the rest of your life". This also seemed to be the state of mind of many of the people who brushed aside the warnings early on, that they are "choosing" not to live life in fear.

On the flip side, the people who were/are still being cautious seem not to be living life in fear and are just being more measured and conservative with their approach to the pandemic.

I've been wondering if this is tied to a more general personality divide, risk takers vs. risk adverse; i.e. risk adverse people look at risk takers as reckless, and that risk takers look at people who are risk adverse as somehow living in abject terror. Which is why these DDF threads about this pandemic just seem to be going in circles, again and again. The 2 personality sides just have trouble understanding each other (even though most people have both traits - usually they'll lean 1 way).

Is your pandemic reaction inline with this aspect of your general personality?

COVID-19 Discussion Board / Miscarriages due to COVID-19
« on: May 03, 2020, 07:58:45 PM »

I wonder what the numbers in our community are - does anyone know if there's been an increase in miscarriages/stillborns over the past months?

The reasoning is that COVID-19 can lead to blood clots and The placenta is made up of miles and miles of blood vessels. Anything that causes clots in the placenta is going to diminish oxygen for the embryo or the fetus and put the fetus at an increased risk of demise.

Credit Cards / PSA: Totalled auto lease can affect your credit score
« on: January 08, 2020, 02:16:34 PM »
TL;DR: An auto lease (possibly applies to financed autos too?) that was "totalled" and reported to the credit agencies as an "Insurance Loss" will negatively impact FICO 8 scores; it will be categorized as a serious (>60 day) delinquency.

This has been reported on other forums (e.g. ); the below is my own experience.

In 2017, I had a leased auto which was involved in an accident that resulted in the totalling of the car. The insurance company paid off the lease; and the leasing bank reported it to the credit agencies as a Positive Account in good standing which was fully paid off and closed. The bank also added a comment stating that this was an "Early termination/Insurance loss".

All was fine until mid-2019 when suddenly my Transunion and Experian FICO 8 credit scores plummeted ~100 points (from 820s to 730s).  (Only FICO 8, all other scores didn't change.)  MyFICO reported that there was a serious delinquency on my account. After much time and effort (and a subscription to MyFICO), I was able to determine that the comment of "Insurance loss" was triggering the FICO 8 algorithm to consider this a "delinquency". I spoke to a CSR at MyFICO and they said that this is by design because "our high scorers don't have this on their reports", i.e. having an insurance loss was somehow some sort of negative flag :o .

Here's what the comments on my credit report looked like for this account:
Equifax: "Early Termination" - score remained in 820 range (apparently "Early Termination" by itself isn't an issue)
Transunion: "Early Termination/Insurance loss" - score dropped to 730 range
Experian: "Early Termination/Insurance loss" - score dropped to 730 range

I called Transunion and after HUCA a few times I was able to get them to fully remove that comment from this account. The next day my score went back up to 820 range.

I haven't been as lucky with Experian, and even after disputing it they are leaving the comment there because it is factually correct.

The leasing bank, also has declined to remove the comment since it's factually correct.

In my opinion, this is a bug in the factors of the FICO 8 algorithm (FICO 9, VantageScore weren't affected); why would an insurance loss have any determination on the credit risk of a consumer?? (CS rep confirmed that this negative "flag" applies no matter which driver was at fault for the insurance loss).
