Credit Cards And Finance / Disputing a charge for negative option billing
« on: December 27, 2020, 04:01:07 PM »
I was just going over our credit card charges for the year when I found a $47 a month charge that's been going on my wife's Chase card since May. She contacted the vendor and was told that she had signed up for a free trial that became a monthly charge when the trial was over, and that it's not refundable. What are the chances that she can successfully dispute any or all of these charges with Chase?

General Discussion / Smart thermostats
« on: November 26, 2020, 05:46:55 PM »
My gas utility, National Grid, has some Black Friday deals on smart thermostats, with various models of Google Nest, Emerson Sensi, and ecobee being offered. My electric utility, PSEG-LI, pays you to let them control your central AC settings at peak demand times ($85 the first year and $25 in succeeding years).

My house has 15-year-old builder's specials thermostats, so I'm thinking of replacing them. One concern I have is that I saw a video review of a Google Nest that said its display is proximity activated. I'm concerned that this would be a Shabbos problem. Also, I've seen complaints in Amazon reviews about smart thermostats being inaccurate, showing temperatures that are several degrees off, and that customer support is really bad. So I'm looking for comments from people who are users of smart thermostats.

Credit Cards And Finance / PagePlus Cellular category change
« on: May 04, 2020, 02:18:45 PM »
I've been charging my PagePlus Cellular service to my Ink Cash card. I recently noticed that as of July 2019, I've only been getting 1X instead of the 5X I was getting up until then. When I contacted Chase, they said:

PAGEPLUS CELLULAR categorizes themselves as "Telecommunications Equipment including telephone sales" with Visa and MasterCard, which isn't in the bonus category. Since the merchant in question was not assigned an appropriate category, your purchase(s) did not qualify for the bonus rewards.

I'm contacting PagePlus, but I'm wondering who actually determines the category. Is it the merchant or is it Visa?

« on: February 21, 2020, 04:23:48 PM »
Jos A Bank has several dress shirts in big and tall sizes for $9.98. Big and tall is not necessarily so big or so tall -- they have 16x36.

General Discussion / LED sukkah lights in the US
« on: November 03, 2019, 12:03:13 PM »
I was in Israel for Sukkos and the stores were selling waterproof LED lights that were 3-4" wide. My hosts had one in their sukkah and it was very nice, much better than the shop light I've used forever. Are these available in the US?

Credit Cards And Finance / Which Chase cards should I get next?
« on: October 27, 2019, 01:00:23 AM »
I finally hit 3/24. My first application was for Ink Unlimited, which was approved. I now can get up to two Chase personal cards. I'm planning to get a few non-Chase cards (Lifemiles, Wells Fargo Rewards, etc.) after I get the Chase ones, so I'll again be under 5/24 in about two years. I have Ink Cash, CSR, CFU, Freedom, and United Mileage Plus. I had the British Airways card and the CSP a few years ago. My wife and I travel to Israel at least once a year and do some domestic travel. I'm thinking of the Iberia card. Any suggestions about that or any other Chase card?

General Discussion / Cashing U.S. Savings Bonds in Israel
« on: September 22, 2019, 12:58:39 PM »
My SIL in Israel has some U.S. Savings Bonds he'd like to cash. The bonds are in the U.S. but can be taken to Israel. Getting him to the U.S. is more problematic since he can't take the time off from work. He went to the U.S. consulate and got them to stamp some form regarding the bonds, but they said if he wants them to verify his signature on the bonds, it will cost $50 per bond, after which he can take them to a bank or something and eventually get the cash. Any suggestions on a better way to do this?

General Discussion / Transferring large sums from the U.S. to Israel
« on: September 16, 2019, 10:08:04 PM »
There's a reference in a topic on buying a house in Israel, but it's from 2013. What's the best way to transfer large sums of money from the U.S. to Israel?

Deals/Deal Requests / Enjoy Life products 50% off
« on: August 29, 2018, 12:25:42 PM »
I got an email from Enjoy Life saying they miss me (how touching!) and offering 50% off and free shipping on orders over $20. Since chocolate is the staff of life, I ordered two 5 lb bags of mega chunks for $34.99 total. That's equivalent to $2.19 per 10 oz bag. There's no indication that it's targeted. Promo code is ELF50, good through 8/29/18 at 11:59 pm PST. To place an order, go to enjoylifefoods.com and click on Buy Now! in the upper right.

Deals/Deal Requests / Buy a $50 gift card at CVS, get $15 Extra Bucks
« on: November 19, 2017, 12:36:20 AM »
Select gift cards. Ad shows Bass Pro Shops, Google Play, and Nike, but says 100s more in store. Limit 1 per household. Extra Bucks have a close-in expiration (2 weeks, I believe) and can't be used to buy gift cards.

I'm looking for reasonably priced durable spinner luggage suitable for overseas flights. Actual linear dimensions must be 62" or less (including wheels). I have an Ebags credit and the Ebags AMEX deal, so I looked at everything with a decent customer rating there. Every one that fits my criteria has reviews that say something broke on the first or second trip.

Up In The Air / United MileagePlus 100 free miles
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:37:36 PM »
If you register your United MileagePlus credit card at united.com/RedCross, you'll get 100 miles. You use your MileagePlus account number to register. This seems to work whether or not you still have the credit card (I canceled mine rather than pay the AF). I say "seems to work" because it said I was registered, but the bonus didn't show up yet. OTOH, my wife still has the card, and when I registered hers, I got the same result.

Up In The Air / Cheap flights from JFK-TLV via London
« on: October 22, 2016, 09:28:47 PM »
Norwegian has cheap flights from JFK to LGW, especially if you pay in British pounds (ht: Theflightdeal). Easyjet has cheap flights from LGW to TLV. Both are budget airlines, so everything is extra. If you choose this way, travel light.

Example for NY yeshiva vacation week (note long layover in London on return trip, and return is on Monday).

Norwegian lv JFK Jan 21 at 22:30 (motzai Shabbos; shkia is 17:00), ar LGW Sunday 10:00
Easyjet lv LGW 12:50 ar TLV 19:55
return
Easyjet lv TLV Jan 29 at 20:50, ar LGW at 00:25 Monday
Norwegian lv LGW at 17:10, ar JFK 20:30

Total is GBP 302.30 for Norwegian, GBP 142.98 for Easyjet. That's less than $550.

Go to norwegian.com and easyjet.com to book.

Tech Talk / FIOS router upgrade
« on: August 21, 2016, 01:03:28 PM »
I just got this email from Verizon: Our records indicate that you have an older model router that is being discontinued. If you do plan to keep using your current router, we will begin billing, on 9.29.16, a monthly Router Maintenance Charge of $2.80 (plus taxes), to ensure we deliver the best support.
You also have the option to upgrade to a certified, pre-owned Fios Advanced Wi-Fi Router. Itís a one-time purchase of $59.99 (plus taxes) with free shipping and handling for a limited time. This is a great opportunity to enhance your Fios experience with faster Wi-Fi speeds.

Neither of these options thrill me. Do I have any other choices? I see a lot of FIOS routers on eBay.

Deals/Deal Requests / Mobil-1 5 qts for $6 after rebate
« on: August 04, 2016, 09:25:58 PM »
Bensbargains has an Amazon deal for a 5 quart jug of Mobil-1 synthetic motor oil for $23 with a $12 rebate, limit 2 per household. This rebate pops up a few times a year, and I usually go to my local dreaded Walmart. This time I decided to use up some of my Amazon gift card credit instead and avoid a trip to my unfavorite store. Much to my surprise, when I ordered two jugs, I got a $10 Discover promotion credit. Discover is the default credit card, but the entire payment came from the gift card credit. I don't remember doing anything to get this promotion.

Total before tax for two jugs is $35.76, less $24 rebate, giving $5.88 for 5 quarts of Mobil-1. And for some reason, it's eligible for free 1-day shipping (I have Amazon Prime).

Up In The Air / Spirit $9 fare club
« on: June 15, 2016, 10:36:34 AM »
I'm considering flying a family group on Spirit. If I do it, I want to buy the tickets at the airport to save the online booking fee, whatever they call it. I'd get the most savings by getting the trial 90-day $9 fare club membership for $20, but apparently the only way to join is to book a ticket online. Any tricks for getting the trial membership?

Sept. 18-27, cash in $50+ in coins and get a coupon for $10 off groceries. See https://www.coinstar.com/#specialOffers for details (scroll down). If you take an eGift card rather than a cash voucher, you avoid the transaction fee. Best eGift card is probably Amazon. Coupon can't be used to purchase gift cards.
