A friend was scheduled to fly El Al from NYC (not sure JFK or Newark) to TLV this coming Saturday night around midnight. El Al informed him today that the flight takeoff time was changed to around 9:30pm - roughly 5 minutes after Shabbos ends.

Why would El Al do that? Presumably it will negatively impact a lot of their customers. (I don't believe for a moment that El Al would harm their business just to spite religious passengers.)

Tech Talk / Calling cards to Israel
« on: July 20, 2016, 07:15:58 PM »
What is the best calling card to purchase for calling to Israel from the US?
The card I've been using is 1.2˘/minute to Israel landlines and 3.9˘/minute to Israel cellphones.

I prefer a card that only charges per-minute (no connection fee) and the value of the card never expires.

General Discussion / Getting the best deal on Car Insurance
« on: October 12, 2015, 11:32:10 PM »
I have beyond excellent credit and beyond excellent driving record (me and wife).  We have had Geico for many years and never made a single claim, ticket or accident.

It's time for my 6 month renewal and I'd like to see if I can find an even lower price (same coverage).

I called Progressive, and their price was 30% higher than what I'm paying currently to Geico.

Any suggestions auto insurers who have really low prices for ultra-low risk drivers?

Thanks

Up In The Air / El Al freq flyer miles for flying on Virgin Atlantic?
« on: August 26, 2015, 06:24:43 PM »
I'm flying JFK -> TLV (El Al), then TLV -> London (El Al), then London -> JFK (Virgin Atlantic).

A friend did the exact same 3-leg flight a few months ago, and got El Al "matmid" miles for the Virgin Atlantic leg also. The travel agent booking my ticket says this is not possible.

Does anyone have experience getting El Al miles for flying on Virgin Atlantic?

Tech Talk / "Emergencies only" cell phone plan
« on: August 16, 2015, 06:15:33 PM »
I want to give my 11 year old son a cellphone to use for his long bus commute to Yeshiva. He would use it if the bus never came to pick him up after school, or other "emergencies".

I see no point in paying Verizon $20+ per month to add him to my current unlimited calling family plan. The phone will get very very little use.

Does anyone know of a phone I can buy that has no monthly fee but charges a reasonable price per-minute for calls?
