On The Road / Prepaying Car rental with Credit Card in a different name
« on: September 04, 2015, 12:09:59 PM »
I need to rent a car in Israel (TLV airport) for 3 weeks over Sukkos this year. I want to prepay the whole rental, including insurance, beforehand so that I can be easily reimbursed for the rental. The issue is it's from a business card that's not in my name and all the companies I looked at said the name on the credit card must match the drivers name (even though we are prepaying).

Hertz and Sixt, both have comparable rates so if one would be better for this than the other I can go with either one.

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

On The Road / Marriot Certs for 2 nights from under 2 names
« on: July 02, 2015, 12:39:05 AM »
I am able to purchase 2 Marriot category 5 certs that I need for an upcoming 2 day stay. They are both from different people.

Has anyone ever tried this before - doing 2 nights in a row (without checking out) without the certs being in my name nor the same name for the 2 nights? I am not familiar with the Marriot program so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Trip Reports / UAE - Bahrain and Qatar TR
« on: June 03, 2015, 12:47:13 AM »
Give AJK credit for this TR - his encouragement is what pushed me to write up my TR. And of course my fellow DDF travel buddy who I welcome to give his input and perhaps write his own TR from his perspective and his own experiences after I had already left. (I think his delay has to do with my taking forever to send him my pics which are currently sitting in Lightroom).

I originally booked this trip to AUH on the Etihad glitch with a friend as it was easier to go for 2 days with a pal than with my wife and kids. He ended up backing out, however I found a fellow DDF member who was on my flight to AUH. He was going solo as well so we connected here on the forums and decided to go together!! Great DDF story connection!

We decided that AUH and Dubai doesn't really need more than one day and I had always wanted to explore the extended area so day 2 was dedicated to other Gulf Coast countries. Bahrain and Qatar were chosen and we got a flight DXB - BAH on CX in J for 9K Avios and BAH - DOH for 4.5K Avios on Qatar Airways. DOH - AUH on Etihad was 5K Amex with a UK based Amex account and we were set.

Our trip ended up as follows JFK-AUH then DXB-BAH-DOH-AUH-JFK. More on that part of the trip later.

We arrived at around noon and quickly hired an airport cab to take us to the Sheik Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. We were completely blow away by it. Only hitch was when were required to x-ray our backpacks which was a bit of hassle. Our Driver waited for us and then took us to the Marriot Harbor Hotel where we went up to the top floor bar to view the palm islands from the sky. Really cool views and free of course as they didn't even ask us to order anything. Could be the time of day had to do with it.

We then hired a car to take us to the Mall of the Emirates to see the indoor skiing and check out the mall. Unfortunately didn't have time to actually ski. I guess there's always the next glitch.

From the Mall of Emirates we went to the Dubai mall to see the Burj Khalifa, water show and explore the magnificent mall. Keep in mind that we hadn't even gone to our hotel yet and were straight off our flight with out backpacks and all, and at this point it was already getting pretty late. The action, lights, and noise can definitely keep you going!

We then went to the Four Points Sheraton where we quickly ate and went to sleep as we had a flight to catch early the next morning. The actual hotel was the Four Points located closer to the airport and it did the trick although the location wasn't that great. I would have preferred to stay in the heart of things although I guess the price reflected the location.

The following morning we took a cab to the airport for our flight to BAH. Unfortunately our flight was a bit delayed however we eventually took off. Upon landing in Bahrain we headed to immigration. The lines were pretty long - filled with migrant workers. My friend and I were both separately taken away from the immigration booth and told to wait as our passports were taken to the back office. We weren't sure why we were singled out for a thorough examination although in the end they did let us through. At this point - due to the flight delay and immigration issues we didn't even have enough time to leave the airport grounds! We did meet an Arab Sheikh outside holding his falcon who let us pose with him so at least we got one pic in Bahrain!

Waiting in the terminal in Bahrain for our flight to Qatar was a surreal scene. Hardly any Westerners and it was filled with Arabs or every stripe and color. Flights kept on taking off to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and all the neighboring countries. Everything was a bit confusing and the terminal we were in felt more like a train station. When we finally took the bus to our plane we were happy that the Qatar airlines flight crew for the short 20 minute flight were typical Westerners. Watching the Arab women refuse to sit next to men and the watching the men refuse to buckle before takeoff and landing reminded me of an ElAl flight in a strange way.

To be continued from Doha Qatar...

Up In The Air / Disputing charge on AA
« on: February 18, 2014, 11:42:57 PM »
I recently bought a ticket for a bit over 250 on AA metal domestic. I tried cancelling within 24 hours and they said that they don't allow cancellations within 24 hours since they give the hold option on the website. This was news to me. They eventually gave me a travel voucher for the value.

Don't see myself using the voucher anytime soon and don't feel like paying for this ticket. Do I need to worry about getting blacklisted or anything of the sort from AA if I dispute the charge? They don't have my AA info, just my name. (used a chase card  :( ).

Destination Guides And Trip Planning / Malaysia Master thread
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:14:00 PM »
Did not see a master thread on Malaysia so decided to start one.

I am considering going to Malaysia with my wife, and was wondering if anyone from DDF has ever been there? Is it safe to go as a Jew?
Will I have trouble bringing in my teffilin as well as kosher food?

Also any tips on good destinations within Malaysia?

General Discussion / Photo Albums
« on: November 05, 2012, 08:56:03 PM »
Whenever we get back from long trips, my wife and I search for a photo album with built in pages that still have a high picture capacity.

Never had much luck in finding a good one (like 500-600) except for the ones that split up the page with horizontal and vertical pics. Anyone have any ideas?

On The Road / Parking at Newark

Anyone have any tips on affordable parking in Newark?
Found online Newark premier parking ventures for 57 dollars all included for 6 days and wondering if anyone used them, or perhaps had a good experience with a different company.

Tech Talk / Underwater cameras
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:07:30 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with underwater cameras or cases? When I was by the great barrier reef I rented a camera for 60 dollars and after that decided that I need to buy one. I have found online different cases that you can use with your camera. Any tips or pointers?
I have the Canon elph 100 HS and the Nikon coolpix P7000.

Has anyone ever done the sea cliffs of Molakai?

Up In The Air / TACA booking
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:30:25 PM »
I am trying to book a TACA flight from the United website from EZE to LIM and it is showing availabilty, however when I try to book it is giving me an error message which reads as follows

" Due to rapidly changing partner availability the following flights are no longer available. Please choose another flight or modify your search criteria"

However whenever I go back and sign in it shows that it is still available. What can this mean? It has been like this for over a day now.

On The Road / Under 21 in Florida Hotel
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:39:18 PM »
My younger sister wants to stay at the Four Points by Shearton Miami beach however she is just 17. Her friend going with her is 19. Will she have a problem checking in? I would put the reservation under my name as they have my date of birth and I am over 21 I am just not sure how to arrange this and if she will have a problem.

Up In The Air / Fully refundable ticket
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:41:40 PM »
I need to book a fully refundable ticket from NY to GRU which I will definitly cancel and was wondering what the safest way to do it is. I am booking the ticket just for visa purposes to Brazil and will then cancel.

( if you were wondering why I do not use my real ticket for the visa, I am going in thru Peru and therefore for the visa I have heard that they require yellow fever vaccine as I am originating in a YF risk area)

Up In The Air / Booking on TAM
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:27:38 PM »
I am trying to book a flight on TAM from the Brazilian site as it is a good 60 dollars cheaper then on the US site however when I get to the end of the booking by the billing info it asks for a CPF (Somente números) number which is some Brazilian identity number and it is not letting it go without it. When I called TAM they said that there are sales for Brazilians and if you come up with a Brazilian CC you can do it or just go on the Intl. site. Anyone ever tried making up a CPF? Using a Brazilian travel agent who would have a good cc of course?

On The Road / Shortening Sheraton reservation
« on: May 21, 2012, 10:37:41 PM »
I have a reservation using C and P in a Sheraton in Rio for 3 nights however I may take a Motsei Shabbos flight and shorten the reservation to 2 days. Is it possible to shorten such a reservation by a day or should I just make a second booking which is now avail for 2 nights and cancel one when I decide.
Also Shabbos ends around 6, I know as a gold member when avail I get 4pm checkout but what would be my options with a 6 pm? Is it possible to negotiate for a discounted rate to stay the extra hours?

Up In The Air / Airline comparison with mileage availability

Intersting chart with the availability averages for mileage tickets on different airlines. Wonder if it is accurate though Delta on the bottom is of course.
