Credit Cards / Chase Bonuses - how much time must pass?
« on: March 04, 2019, 04:42:05 PM »
The last time I applied for a Sapphire card and received the bonus was in August 2015.  I later downgraded my Sapphire cards to Freedom cards, so I don't currently have any Sapphire cards and haven't applied for new ones in over 3 years.  I just tried applying for a new Reserve card and was denied because I got the bonus in the lats 48 months.  Since when is there a 4 year wait in between getting the same card?  Has anyone else had this issue or any ideas of a way around it?

Credit Cards / Travel protection only if trip booked with credit card?
« on: December 12, 2016, 07:35:35 PM »
Does one only have travel protection benefits from a credit card if the trip is booked with the card itself - or would you have the travel benefits just by being a cardholder?  What if only part of the trip was booked using a card?  For example, if a flight was purchased through Chase points, but a hotel was purchased with the Sapphire Preferred, would someone have trip protections for the flight portion (like delayed flight, lost baggage, etc) - if that portion wasn't purchased with the Sapphire Preferred card?

Credit Cards / Effects of opening authorized user cards in your own name
« on: August 24, 2015, 11:42:50 AM »
I recently added another 30 authorized users onto my Amex cards, most of which are in my and my husband's names.  I inputted our socials in the process of getting the other cards since I wasn't able to add these cards to my online account without them.  I recently noticed that they are beginning to appear on my credit report.  It has not had a negative impact on my credit score yet, and my credit score according to Credit Karma (how accurate is that anyway?) is above 800.  However, I'm wondering if I should worry that it shows so many new cards, specifically all of which were opened in the last couple of months.  When I click on each card, I see that it shows it's an authorized user, but it's still showing up as a new account.

Here are my questions:
1) Will having all these new cards on my credit report negatively impact my score?
2) Will this prevent me from being approved for new card applications, since it appears that I've recently gotten so many new credit cards?
3) Are there any other effects this may have besides for the above two listed questions?

Up In The Air / 1,000,000 SPG Points - Good Use
« on: October 07, 2014, 08:28:51 PM »
Posting for a friend:

I have 1,000,000 SPG points and am looking for the best way to make use of them.  Any ideas?

I tried activating cards of additional cardholders that I added to my Amex accounts.  However, I was unable to do this online and received an error message that I need to call in to Amex customer care and be ready to provide birthdates and social security numbers of the additional users.

When I called, I was told I cannot activate without providing the socials.  The representative informed me that this was a new rule.

Does anybody have a way around this?  I do not want to give the social security numbers of my additional cardholders.

Thanks in advance!

Up In The Air / Flying Business or First to Australia
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:19:26 AM »
What are the best miles to rack up to prepare for a business or first class trip from N.Y. to Australia?  Will be traveling with 2 adults + infant.

Can someone could give me a little advice regarding which are the best airlines to use for this trip and which miles transfer there (as well as how many miles I'll be needing)?

I currently have 265,000 Chase points.  I'd like to fly  to Israel to visit my sick grandmother with my baby daughter in August (she'll be 7 months then).  I want to fly business without a stopover.  I'd really appreciate some advice here.

What is the best use of Chase points in order to fly business to Israel.  Is it just United?  If so, should I just search United's availability on their website and then book directly with them or is there a better method?  Also, would business class have an infant bassinet so I don't have to hold my baby the whole time? I don't want to book her an individual seat if that will be an additional full mileage ticket.

Can someone give me a possible scenario for a week in August that I can book using these miles?  I'm hoping to book this as soon as possible to make sure my grandmother can meet her great-granddaughter, being that she's not doing well.  August is the first time I can go.

I really appreciate the help in advance!

Up In The Air / Best miles to rack up for business class to Israel?
« on: December 04, 2013, 10:06:36 PM »
I have both a Chase Preferred card and an SPG card that I use to rack up miles.  Which is best to try to build up if I want to use miles to fly business class to Israel?  I was originally thinking to use Chase and transfer to United, but with the mileage rate changes, that doesn't look so good anymore.  Which of these two is the best card to spend on in terms of transfer options for miles to Israel?

Credit Cards / Paying mortgage payments with a credit card
« on: December 04, 2013, 10:04:53 PM »
Excuse my ignorance, but I'd appreciate if someone can clarify the following: Is it possible to pay for a mortgage using a credit card?  If so, how?  I saw a few people mention Bluebird as a possibility, but I'm unclear on how to do that.  Any other options?

General Discussion / Mortgage payments affecting credit score
« on: December 03, 2013, 12:35:50 AM »
Even though our mortgage payment is due on the first of the month, we were told that we have a grace period until the 17th.  If we pay by the 17th, then there is no late penalty.  My question is will paying on the 15th affect our credit?  I'm not sure how these things get processed into a credit score or what information is given to the credit bureaus.  Technically, it is past the date the payment is due, but is within their grace period and without a fee.  Will that be reported as a late payment, credit-wise?

Credit Cards / SPG Bonus Question/4 Amex Card Limit?
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:37:26 PM »
Last year, I applied for and received the SPG Business and Consumer cards in August 2012.  I also have a Amex Delta open for a few years now.

A week or so ago, I did a 3BM where I again applied for the SPG Business, SPG Consumer, and Gold cards.  I was approved for the SPG Business (even though I have the same card already) and the Gold Card.  However, I received an email that I need to call to discuss the SPG Consumer.  When I called, I was told 2 things that didn't sound right to me, so I wanted to clarify with the experts here:

1) I was told that there is a 4 card limit on Amex cards, so I can't be approved for an additional card no matter what it is.  This doesn't make sense to me, because after my current approval, I already have 5 cards (2x SPG Business, SPG consumer, Delta, and Gold).  It also sounds like many members here have way more than 4 cards as well.  Is this is a new policy?  Is there a way around this?  The only way I was told that I could get approval would be cancelling one of my other cards.  They wouldn't agree to move some credit from one to the other because the issue was opening another card.

2) I was told that even if I do get this card, I'm not eligible for the 30,000 bonus points promotion because I already have an SPG card open from 2012.  Is this correct?  Does that mean that on the SPG Business that I got approved for again, I will not be receiving the 30,000 promotion?  This is why I signed up for the card, so this would be really frustrating.

Any advice and help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Hoping to get a coupon code or reasonable tickets to the Book of Mormon on July 3rd.  Any ideas?

Up In The Air / Good miles to have for last minute trips
« on: April 05, 2013, 05:18:37 PM »
Right now, I have a about 150,000 SPG points and 150,000 Chase points.  However, when I was stuck with a last minute trip that I needed to book with late notice, neither of these helped me.  It would have cost me too many Chase/United points and SPG would have taken too long to transfer, so I ended up spending a ton of money on a ticket.  (This specific flight was NY to Chicago.)

Would having a specific type of miles have helped me here?  If so, is it worth it to transfer some of the SPG and Chase into miles so that I always have them for when I need for this type of flight?  I don't foresee this coming up in the near future again, but it would be nice to know I have something backed up in case of need.

I often see Dan posting that he was able to use a small amount of miles for this type of flight.  Which miles would that be?  And is it worth it to transfer them now when that would add an expiration date to them?  As far as I understood, Chase doesn't expire, not sure about SPG points.

Any help is appreciated!  Thanks!!

Up In The Air / HELP! 50,000 points+$160 for short haul United flight?
« on: March 08, 2013, 03:11:33 PM »
Looking into flying from NYC to ORD for a bris next week (Thurs-Fri), and I'm a little confused with the mileage and fees, so I hope someone can help me quickly.

For both my husband and I to fly on United leaving Thursday afternoon and coming back Friday afternoon, it's 50,000 miles (25,000 each ticket) plus $160 fee.  Which means, according to my calculations: if we're transferring Chase points, which are worth about 1.75 each, that's $875 for the miles +$160 = $1,035 for short haul flight from NYC to Chicago?!?

Am I missing something or does that make sense?  It seems like that's a lot of money, but I don't really have much to compare it to.  Looking at regular fares on other airlines, it almost seems cheaper to just pay full price for a ticket.  Is this a stupid use of points?  Is there something else I can transfer Chase points to that would make more sense?  When I searched on it said that BA doesn't fly directly between NYC and Chicago.

Can someone please give me some advice, quickly!  Thank you all in advance!!
