Credit Cards / Coinbase debit card with 4% CB (metabank)
« on: October 30, 2020, 04:51:06 PM »

4% cashback paid in crypto. If you already use crypto this might be appealing. Odds of devaluation are about the same as bank or airline currency, odds of increased valuation is non-zero. Or trade for actual cash.

Credit Cards / American Express Vitality rewards card (UK)
« on: December 09, 2019, 02:18:28 PM »
Just saw a news piece about this offering and thought folks here might like to read about it. The new product (only in the UK) gives up to 3% cash back on purchases if you reach a modest annual spending threshold, have life insurance and health insurance, and log a certain amount of physical activity each month.

At first this looked interesting, but then I noticed there's a monthly fee AND a cap on bonus earnings each month (6 GBP fee and cap at 1000 GBP) making the whole thing nonsense. That's a lot of hoops to jump through for a maximum of $14 per month.

Up In The Air / Misleading advertising or true?
« on: November 06, 2014, 12:19:06 PM »
Received this email from a broker who I should probably name but won't for now.

"Sell your miles now before an industry wide devaluation beginning January 1st 2015."

I have no interest in selling miles (now or ever) but if there is an upcoming industry wide devaluation of miles I would like to know. Is there any truth to this? I searched these forums but didn't see anything about it.

I have reservations at the Intercontinental a block from the White House checking in on 8/31 for 2 nights. I cannot use these nights and would love to sell them if anyone is interested. The hotel costs 50,000 IHG points per night (if you book with points) or $220 with tax per night.

Asking $160 per night. Would be willing to sell one night or both nights.

On The Road / Hilton IPO
« on: December 04, 2013, 05:29:06 PM »
As hotel patrons, do any of you have thoughts on the upcoming Hilton IPO? I personally think it way overvalues the company, but I'd sure like to get input from this crowd if anyone has any thoughts. Is the Hilton chain twice the size (in value) of SPG? Twice Marriott? Three times Hyatt? If not, then there is no upside potential at the stock price they set.

Before you lambaste me, I already posed this to the readers of the stocks thread but it wasn't the right audience. I personally always viewed Hilton much lower in the hierarchy of hotel chains than the top, and am shocked by the valuation. I've seen the numbers, but I'd value some opinion from the "mattress run" point of view too.

Credit Cards / Sapphire MC vs. United Club card for car rental
« on: December 13, 2012, 01:11:47 PM »
Wasn't sure if this question belonged in Credit Cards or On The Road forum, but it seems more of a credit card question.

Which is the better card to use if I am renting a car in Antigua? I have Sapphire Preferred Mastercard and United Club card. Thanks.

Credit Cards / United Club Card - UA Expedite Fee waiver
« on: October 04, 2012, 01:51:32 PM »
So I'm booking an award ticket for someone else using my miles on Since the flight is only a couple of days away there is a $75 expedite fee, but I have the Club card, so I was expecting it to be waived. But when I checked chase online (the next day) I saw that a $75 fee posted. The flight is United Express. Is this a mistake on their part or is there some fine print that I missed?
