Up In The Air / UA international OW = half of RT
« on: November 05, 2017, 05:38:10 AM »
I noticed that United Airline seems to be charging international One-Way's at about half the price of Round Trip (at least between Australia and USA).
Is this:
A mistake?
A new policy?
Or is this old news and my head has been in the sand?

Especially that there have been consistently decent offers in the last year.

And also for guidance dealing with Australia's completely different credit rating system.

Up In The Air / Unaccompanied Minor
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:47:18 PM »
United has an annoying policy that unaccompanied minors can be booked only on non-stop flights. [This is presumably due to last year's fiasco, where inept United workers lost children. In typical United fashion, the problem is "solved" by taking away the option altogether.]

A phone agent just told me that I can book two connecting flights as separate tickets, and then it is not a problem to have my child travel unaccompanied. To me that sounds crazy, so I just wanted to know if anyone with knowledge about this can chime in.

Credit Cards And Finance / Bank Witholding $$$
« on: June 09, 2014, 08:08:31 PM »
I recently opened a new bank account, intending to use online.
After I made the initial deposit, the bank told me they are blocking the funds until I personally appear at the branch and verify my identity.
The problem is that the closest branch is nowhere near.
They refuse to allow me to establish my identity any other way, such as by sending/faxing documents.
It didn't help to escalate the matter to manager, etc.
Are they allowed to do this legally?
Any way around it?
Failing all else, since I funded by CC, would I win a dispute?

Up In The Air / United: Personal Device Entertainment System
« on: March 12, 2014, 05:49:25 PM »
Sounds like an innovative idea, and an inexpensive way for United to roll out personal entertainment on their older planes:

With this new service, sponsored by the MileagePlus® Explorer Card, you can choose from over 150 movies and nearly 200 TV shows and watch them free of charge on your personal device. Most planes will be equipped with the new system very soon, and we’ll have it installed on most domestic aircraft by the end of 2014. We’ll begin on Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and select 777-200 aircraft, followed by additional fleets. In the end, all United-operated flights will have some form of entertainment.
Here’s all you need to do before you board to make your inflight viewing as seamless as possible:
1.    Download the latest United app from the iTunes® App Store if you’ll be using a mobile device. Laptops do not require the app. (Android™ and other mobile devices are not fully supported at this time.)
2.    Charge your device fully.
Once you’re onboard, just click on what you’d like to watch. You can start, stop, rewind, pause and switch your movie or TV show anytime. It’s that simple.

Do any other carriers offer this?

Up In The Air / 777 in 3-4-3 configuration
« on: March 05, 2014, 05:42:45 PM »
I am looking at taking some long-haul flights in Y, total of 26 hours flying time.
One of the options if to fly on a 777 in 3-4-3 configuration (on Etihad specifically).
Other options are a little more expensive.
I had a look at FT and other websites, and people describe the 3-4-3 configuration on a B777 as sheer hell.
I was wondering if this might just be exaggeration - how likely that 1/2 inch less in width and 1 inch less in pitch would make such a big difference?

I would be grateful to hear other people's personal first-hand experiences.

Credit Cards And Finance / Balance Transfer to International CC
« on: February 22, 2014, 07:17:53 PM »
An international CC is offering me a fee-free balance transfer.
I am thinking of using the offer on a US CC.
Would there be any concerns of the US CC flagging it, or not liking it, for whatever reason?
(I can't think of a reason, but just checking.)

Credit Cards And Finance / Amex Australia
« on: January 23, 2014, 06:54:16 PM »
For anyone who is in Australia, AMEX has recently turned into a real money maker, with new offers every week or two.
A partial list of credits from the last three months:

Small Business November - $50
David Jones Spend Credit - $50
Country Road Spend Credit - $30
Liqourland Spend Credit - $20
Target Spend Credit - $10

Multiply that by ten (just two accounts, with four AU's each), and that is $1,600!

Most of the above stores sell gift cards to other stores (such as Coles-Myers group), so you don't need to actually buy anything in that store.

Also, true data point - AMEX is very precise with their wording when they write in the T&C's:
"Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned or cancelled."

Up In The Air / Best seats in the cabin
« on: December 23, 2013, 05:21:29 PM »
I don't see a thread about this topic, so here goes:

I am flying several segments on Emirates A380, and I see that the economy section is the entire lower level.
Is it better to reserve seats up in the front cabin, or in the second cabin?

I presume the front cabin may be quieter than the second cabin.
I presume that the second cabin may be smoother, and less likely to be full.

[I don't care about window views.]

TIA for your input.

Just Shmooze / Forum Game. Count 10,000-1 meets Count 1-10,000.
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:33:52 PM »
Game rules are simple:
No consecutive posts by one member.
Each post can only contain one number.
(This thread is not that stupid, it is at least as good as two other ones.)

Winner is the first person who accurately guesses the number at which threads “Count 10,000-1” and “Count 1-10,000” meet.

If you win, I will personally PM meshug and CV on your behalf, and ask them to provide a 50 GC of your choice.
Only numbers – no other posts allowed, violators will be … I am not sure I can do anything about them.

Up In The Air / Polar routes during Sefirah
« on: November 12, 2013, 09:15:27 AM »
I am looking to travel during Sefirah, and I don't cross dateline.
I am curious about Air China flight 990, which takes off just after midday (JFK), and lands following day just after midday (PEK).
This is a polar route, and I am wondering if this flight experiences any period of night time.
If yes, it would counteract the fact that you are technically crossing the dateline.
[Time of year: Late April / Early May.]
If you know this flight, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Tech Talk / iPhone Group SMS
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:54:56 PM »
Although the iPhone messaging app allows group SMS.
However, to add or remove recipients, you must create a new group message conversation.
[Very clever of them ...]
I am looking for an app which manages Group SMS.
I see a couple in the app store but not sure which would be best.

I am not interested in a WhatsApp type of App, because I would like all recipients to get message as SMS, (regardless of what Apps they do or don't have on their phones,) and also, because this is not for a conversation.

Anyone have any suggestions?
