Destination Guides And Trip Planning / Re: Chicago Master Thread

how much does a taxi or uber cost from ORD to West Rogers park or Peterson park? Also does returning a car rental take a long time? (i'm coming to chicago in and out and deciding if I should rent a car or not)

uber should be about 20-25 bucks. Never rented a car there so I can't answer that one.

Up In The Air / Re: EL AL
« on: September 09, 2020, 03:43:56 PM »
We had 3 round-trip tickets EWR-TLV for late July that were cancelled.
El Al is simply unreachable.
We filed a DoT complaint and just received this (see below).
Has anyone else been in this situation and can tell us what to expect?
Thank you.
(I hope I'm posting in the right place.)

This responds to your communication regarding EL AL ISRAEL. The U.S. Department of Transportation seeks to ensure that all airline passengers are treated fairly. Complaints from consumers are helpful to us in determining whether the airlines are in compliance with our rules and to track trends or spot areas of concern that warrant further action.

Based on the information you have provided, your complaint appears to fall under the Department's rules. We will forward your complaint to the airline and ask the company to respond directly to you with a copy to us. Airlines are required to acknowledge receipt of a consumer complaint within 30 days and provide a substantive response to the complainant within 60 days. We will review the airline's response. If you need to contact me, please include your name and case number (see above).

If our review of your complaint and the response from the company discloses a potential violation of our rules, we may pursue enforcement action. Generally, we pursue enforcement action on the basis of a number of complaints which may indicate a pattern or practice of violating our rules. Your complaint may be among those considered and may lead to appropriate enforcement action including the assessment of civil penalties. However, we have no authority to order compensation for individual complainants.

We have entered your complaint in our computerized industry monitoring system, and it will be counted among the number of complaints filed against this airline in our monthly Air Travel Consumer Report. This report allows consumers and air travel companies to compare the complaint records of individual airlines and tour operators. The data in this report also serve as a basis for rulemaking, legislation and research. Consumer information for air travelers, including the Air Travel Consumer Report and our pamphlet Fly-Rights, a Consumer's Guide to Air Travel, can be found on our website: www.transportation.gov/airconsumer. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

I received the same response last week. I think we just need to wait (up to) 60 days to hears ElAl's response.

COVID-19 Discussion Board / Re: would you fly now?
« on: May 27, 2020, 11:10:48 AM »
I hate flying in general (fear) but would fly now in a heartbeat. Haven't been tested for antibodies.

Issue for me is the Rabbanim in our city have said to only fly if essential. Taking the family for vacation doesn't qualify.

As soon as they allow it, I'm gone.

Good news?

Although the death toll is unfortunately climbing in the US right now, the mortality rate is actually dropping (for now) as more testing becomes available. Currently at 1.4%
Hopefully that percentage keeps dropping.

Seems like they have regressed to the early days when no one knew about the QF-LY partnership

To be fair, this was for an ORD-TLV ticket, which is not available on the website, so maybe it's more complicated than most. But it shouldn't be. (and it should be bookable on their website by now)

Can anyone post their booking reference number for an ORD-TLV flight on ElAl they booked via Qantas. Having so much trouble booking a flight, it's so frustrating.

Finally was able to confirm a business class seat was available, but agent (sms agent) was not able to book. She said that "classic flight rewards with Elal can only be made for flights between israel and Asia/South Africa/India/New York/Toronto/Los Angeles/Athens/Cairo and selected city in West Europe and East Europe."

Now, obviously the agent is mistaken. Problem is, this was via SMS as Dan suggested but they are still unable to book it. "Our fares do not permit this routing"

I told her it is possible to book this route, but she still couldn't do it. She suggested I get booking reference from someone who has successfully booked this route so she (or any agent) could look into it and figure out how they did it.

If anyone has, and they don't mind sharing, can you post or PM me your booking reference number?

UPDATE - I was able, finally, to book the flight. Took at least a dozen times trying. Finally got an agent (over the phone, not sms) who was able to do it. Never got a confirmation email but it was there under my bookings on the qantas website. Had an elal reference number, so I contacted elal (via whatsapp) who was able to see it in their system. However, the points were never deducted from my Qantas account and I was not able to login to the elal website with that reference number. So I was worried.

Contacted qantas again, who said the agent did not finish the process and it had not been ticketed. Said they are doing it now and should receive a confirmation in 24-48 hours.
Of course after 48 hours, still nothing. Contacted them again and next agent said same thing...it was never finished but they will do it now and to wait 24-48 hours. I said "i'll hold." :)

10 minutes later I got the actual confirmation and points were deducted. Was then able to check it on the elal website and even change my seat/meals.

Bottom line - took FOREVER to get this one way flight done. Completely ridiculous.

Ember and Red heifer both very busy, seems like even having a reservation doesn’t really help, food imho is better at ember
Chabad has the kosher hotspot, have to order in advance though

Ember is definitely the better option for yeshiva week. Could make a free reservation in advance and order anything off the menu for regular prices (as opposed to Red Heifer which was only taking pre-paid reservations at ridiculous prices). I went to both and as long as you went early (we went at 5:30) was not busy at either place.

Ember's food is (slightly) better also imho.

Chabad is great and they deliver just have to order a day in advance.

I can't imagine going to dag dag during yeshiva week. Takes a good 3 hours on a regular night:)

For the return you should be open to looking at other options such as United, Flying Blue, etc should LY release no space to QF.

Yes, just super annoying. Was so excited to finally have a direct flight from Chicago. Also when I tried to book the one way there they suddenly only had 1 ticket available, not 2.

Back to the drawing board. Good thing I didn't transfer hundreds of thousands of amex points specifically for this route. 🙄

Why not book one way at a time?

Can we do that? Is it just half of the roundtrip cost?

What happens if we can not find a return flight, is there a fee to cancel?

Is it possible that they just haven't released award seats for the route yet? It's not set to start until march.

don't think that's it, because Qantas sms was ready to book the flight there for me. Just didn't have anything for the way back.

Elal gives extra availability to their own members (Or blocks awards from partners) Whatever you see available online through QF is usually what they can book

Problem is I can't see what is available online through QF. It doesn't show the direct flights from ORD on their site.

If they are telling you via text that there is no availability then 99% there is NO availability.

Got it, Thanks.

It's just so frustrating because it shows as available on elals site. And I have to keep checking each day via sms to see if it opens up since there is no way to check on the Qantas site.
