Amex wants my personal car insurance info. I'm worried if I give it my premium will go up. Should I just tell them no?
If you had the amex premium then its primary insurance.

*sigh* I want to vomit and cry but here it is.

In sf this morning I put my laptop in car trunk, went to get coffee. It was either then or at the museum legion of honor that my backpack was stolen.

Second time in sf and here I thought I was being smart as it was in trunk.

My laptop stolen but who cares, they stole my tefillen. I'm crushed and devastated plus it's 1500$? For new rashi tefillen.

I scoured the garbage cans within 1 mile of coffee shop but nothing. I should have done museum garbage cans in area but frankly I'm wiped.

I went to sf pd and filed a police report.

Now, here's where I hope I can find some comfort, I used my business amex platinum to rent car. Last time I was left with nothing because I used my chase sapphire.

What's my next step. Call amex?  Also I need my laptop to work, will they pay for me to buy a new one?  I used miles for flights so no trip insurance there.
Did you call Amex? Did you have the premium protection plan?
A friend had similar story, took him 2 years to get amex to do it but he got reimbursed.
SF is notorious for theft. In the area near Lombard st the streets are full of broken glass from car windows.

how about if I only take a hand luggage and they make me check it in when I get to the plane? Same story?
If you have basic economy then nothing you can do about that.

On small planes like AA CLE-LGA will do 'Valet Check' (the red tag) and they will give that to you as soon as you arrive in LGA.

More than once have i or a family member been stopped at customs with food for the day as an apple or sandwich, at worst they throw it out. Seems to me like this article is a rare case.

In general, the problems aren't really doing the things in question (bringing food / taking money etc.).
When i was 17 yrs old i once arrived with 10 cartoons of cigarettes w/o declaring (i think only 1 is allowed free) and all they did was charge taxes on the other 9. Still came out half the price of cigarettes in the US.

Technically, you have to declare all food. However, I donít think Iíve ever declared it and now consider myself lucky that I never got into trouble.

What exactly happens if you declare food at a GE kiosk?
IME as soon as you have anything to declare they send you to the counter to put your bag through the machine.

Unless you, or a dependent is in the military, you are out of luck.
You can get a debit card which may work at some locations.
Where was this?
Do you know of a location that did not accept USAA debit card as proof of being a member?

I understand but most of us in this forum in the USA I would guess do not add that as we rely on our auto policy for rentals in the USA.  I wanted to know what options my Israeli family member has besides adding/paying for it at the rental desk
Maybe most that have a car of their own, i doubt that it's most of us on this forum..
If they are renting for an extended period they can call an insurance company and create a policy that covers liability only.
