Yes you will be OK - their systems can be a bit weird with date counting, so while the rule as such, is 2 apps per 60 days, it is safer to wait 3-5 days more.

As your 1st app was April 15, to be 99.999% sure, apply tomorrow rather than today (although I would think today you are 99.9% good

If you have not applied for the AA Executive card yet, then OK to do this one - you will have 37 days after the annual fee posts to cancel and get refund. This was a lovely card to churn, but does seem that has come to an end.

Perhaps try to get a rep at CITI to place a note on your account - that you did not know this was going to be a CA - that you have cancelled the order with AMEX - and could CITI please credit the 5% fee on this one occassion? A nice rep should agree to that - and if the 1st rep does not - try try again.

Freddie - did you order PERSONALIZED cards with your name? If yes, these take a few days to produce, and hopefully, you can get a half competent person at Amex GC to cancel the order - warning: Their reps are idiots.

From other posts I have read, if this is the first time this has happened to you, Citi should waive the Cash Advance Fee - but you will also need to make sure any interest charged is also removed - possibly you will have to wait until the statement is produced and get a credit for the interest (in case you were not aware, CA are charged interest from the 1st day of the advance).

Cash advances do not earn miles - so you will need to spend some more - keep in mind that March 1 is only 5 days away, and you can do AP. If you have more than one AP account you can use the same AA card for each AP account by creating different virtual CC numbers for each AP account.

If you are not familiar with this - do a search under my name - I dont have many post here on DDF, so it should be easy to find a detailed "spoon fed" guide on how to create virtual numbers with Citi credit cards.


I normally do not read these type of threads - but this one gained my interest. Dan tries to help, yet a few think there is a hidden agenda. While on this occassion, I think these people are completely off the mark - there have been threads  (on other forums) where "mis-information" is promoted to try and preserve a method/technique from being abused by the masses.

After all - we don't want red circles and black arrows on here do we ??

Did anybody here meet the threshold and get points by buying Amex GCs online?

Citi will treat purchases of AMEX Gift Cards as being from a "financial institution" - which will mean Citi will consider it a CASH ADVANCE - no miles, and a fee for the CA as well.

Any clarification for the following:

When we do the airline credits (I did $200 in Dec 2013 and $200 the past few days), do the credits "offset" the $400 spend - and therefore, I actually need to spend ANOTHER $400

If I returned something for $100, I would definitely expect that $100 would be deducted from my "total spend" towards the $10K obligation.

My gut feel is that I should spend another $400 just to be on the safe side - just seem to be having my gift card orders decline the past few days - otherwise the spend would be simple to accomplish. TIA

Upgraded my BGR in mid-November, spent the $10k and the bonus points posted very quickly (maybe within a day of hitting the spend). Waiting to do the PGGM in January and then downgrading back to the BGR. Thanks everyone!

I am getting close to $10,000 but not quite there yet. From previous experienes:

Does the annual fee (in my case $412.50) count towards the "spend requirement" - or is it excluded?

When we do the airline credits (I did $200 in Dec 2013 and $200 the past few days), do the credits "offset" the $400 spend - and therefore, I actually need to spend ANOTHER $400   OR

Are the credits considered a "payment" and the $400 airline spend, does in fact, count towards the $10,000 "spend requirement"?


I also did the Neimann Marcus credit for $50 and the small biz sat credit for $10 - so, in fact, it's $460 of spend, that I am not sure if I need to "spend again" to meet the $10K obligation.


I could buy some Amex gift cards - except my last 2 orders (for small amounts in fact) were declined - could be the 14 day/$5K rule.

The 18-month restriction doesn't apply to AA business.

Only restrictions that do apply are ,
"No more than 2 Citi applications of any kind in 60 days (65 days to be safe).
No more than 1 Citi business application in 90 days (95 to be safe)."

So you should be ok.

Refer to the Citicard thread on Flyertalk, from page 242 - a decent number of posters reporting that they are being DENIED THE BUSINESS CARD, because they previously had a business card in the previous 18 months.

I had a planned churn for next week - but I will hold back for now until I see if things have changed.

If I understand correctly, you used the SAME Amex gift card (with $3000 value) on 3 different AP accounts.

I try to avoid this at all costs - every AP account using a different credit card or gift card.

I tend to order say 6 x $500 Amex GC - lots of codes around for no card fees. Also, if you order the $500 cards, without your name, in the morning, quite often, I get the UPS delivery next day.

Not for less than 6 months, but there was a promo in autumn 2012 offering 5000 miles that was suppose to be for south america only - but many in USA signed up, and initially got the 5000 miles. In Jan 2013, there were reports that the 5000 miles were "clawed back" from United by Chase as a "mistake".

So I am asking those who do this churn, of their recommended time scales.

A couple of years ago there were some reports that Chase was being aggressive with frequent churners - I do recall there was language in the T+C. If you google Chase claw back miles you will see some reports - but nothing I can see in 2013.

It is my usual practice to keep cards for 1 year - but I am trying to see if I can do the United churn a bit faster.

I received UA card September 15, 2013. Did the spend and got the 55K miles in October.

Would it be OK to close the card now OR is it better to keep the card open for atleast 6 months (so until Mid-March 2014)

I generally keep cards open for minimum 6 months, but would appreciate if say, 4 months would be good enough OR am I risking that Chase would claw back the 55K miles?


Once closed, is it sufficient to wait 1 month before trying the churn? Or best to wait somewhat longer?

I live in UK so cant participate in the SBS promotion - my mum lives in NY - and she has 7 AMEX cards all registered, very legitimate to get $70 credit.

I am curios as to why a small retailer would want someone to come in with say 70 cards - all with different names on them (AU) and let anyone buy 70 x $10 purchases?

I also trust that the AU  everyone are adding are real people - I can only comment about UK, but would think laws are similar in USA - using fake names to obtain a monetary gain is fraud ! Even though you are paying for the goods you purchased (so therefore not stealing) - if using false names (or under aged children's names) for the purpose of obtaining the $10 credit - in UK (and I would have thought in USA) - this is fraud.

Please be careful.

I applied today for upgrade on the Biz Gold, using the link in the wiki (30K with $10K spend) - very easy and instant approval. I have only had the Biz Gold for 2 months.

I also have a PERSONAL Gold - since March (8 months) - I tried to upgrade on phone, yday and today. Each time I am told I must have the card atleast 1 year before I can upgrade.

Just wondering if there is any work-around this, as a pity to lose the $200 airline credit for 2013.

While it would be nice to have a sign up bonus, if I could just do the upgrade, this would be good enough, as could get $200 in 2013 and $200 in Jan 2014 - before doing the downgrade.
