Hi guys
No, i wasnt late to the party, but i didnt book anything as i knew this will happen.
Nobody could have really expected united to allow this to go throught. +1 to the guys that flew and i feel bad for the others that started dreaming of their vacation and really thought they will go...
united has plenty of laywers working for them and if they cancel it, they have the legal backing...
If you file a complain with dot its stam "chaseirisch" in my opinion, as you will not gain from it, but just give them a headache they dont deserve
United can clearly claim, that by using a small account you knew it was a error, as no normal person would try to book a f ticket to hkg with a 2k account...
Thank united for letting you dream for 48 hours and move on
+1
Gary Leff of View From the Wing puts it best:
Getting in on a deal like this is buying an almost free lottery ticket. If the travel provider honors, you’ve got an amazing once in a lifetime style opportunity. If they don’t you’re really no worse off. I generally don’t begrudge a travel provider if they cancel right away. Once several days or a week has gone by I start to rely on the booking and I expect it to be honored. But if cancelled with clear communication and in a timely manner, I don’t see much harm or foul. I get in because if someone is giving away free trips somewhere cool, I’d love to be a part of it. But I don’t get angry if I don’t get aamzing free stuff at someone else’s expense.
It seems absurd that people are threatening class action law suits over this. Any reasonable person who booked this fare knew that it was a mistake fare. A majority of those who booked this mistake fare are no worse for wear (as long as they weren't foolish enough to go ahead and book other non-refundable travel reservations based on their intended itinerary) and obviously a significant majority of those who booked this mistake fare had no intention of booking travel to HKG in the near future anyway. There is certainly nothing wrong with booking a mistake fare (although in my opinion booking 50 separate itineraries is definitely morally questionable). However, anyone booking a mistake fare should be able to appreciate the inherent chance that their itinerary will be canceled. In this specific situation United has responded to the situation in a timely and professional manner.
Full disclosure: I did not get in on this "deal". I wish I had, and that I had left immediately like E. I
WAS hoping that United would honor this deal for the benefit of those on DDF who were able to book themselves in for what would have been one of the greatest price mistake fares of all time.
