Re: Colin Kaepernick†protest against USA From fb:

An Open Letter to Colin Kaepernick,

Dear Colin guess you have been pretty busy these last few days. For the record I donít think any more or less of you for not standing for the National Anthem. Honestly, I never thought that much about you, or any professional athlete for that matter, to begin with. Iíve read your statement a few times and want you to know I am one of the reasons you are protesting. You see I am a retired police officer that had the misfortune of having to shoot and kill a 19-year-old African American male. And just like you said, I was the recipient of about $3,000 a month while on leave which was a good thing because I had to support a wife and three children under 7-years-old for about 2 months with that money. Things were pretty tight because I couldnít work part time. Every police officer Iíve ever known has worked part-time to help make ends meet.

You know Colin the more I think about it the more we seem to have in common. I really pushed myself in rehab to get back on the street, kind of like you do to get back on the field. You probably have had a broken bone or two and some muscle strains and deep bruising that needed a lot of work. I just had to bounce back from a gunshot wound to the chest and thigh. Good thing we both get paid when we are too banged up to ďplayĒ, huh? We both also know what itís like to get blindsided. You by a 280- pound defensive end, ouch! Me, by a couple of rounds fired from a gun about 2 feet away, into my chest and thigh. We also both make our living wearing uniforms, right? You have probably ruined a jersey or two on the field of play. I still have my blood stained shirt that my partner and paramedics literally ripped off my back that cold night in January. Fortunately, like you I was given a new one. Speaking of paramedics arenít you glad the second we get hurt trainers and doctors are standing by waiting to rush onto the field to scoop us up. Iím thankful they get to you in seconds. It only took them about 10 minutes to get to me. By the grace of God, the artery in my thigh didnít rupture or else 10 minutes would have been about 9 minutes too late. We also have both experienced the hate and disgust others have just because of those uniforms we wear. I sure am glad for your sake that the folks who wear my uniform are on hand to escort you and those folks that wear your uniform into stadiums in places like Seattle!

I guess thatís where the similarities end Colin. You entertain for a living, I and almost 800,000 others across this country serve and protect. Are there some bad apples within my profession? Absolutely and they need to be identified and fired or arrested! But you know what, the vast majority do the right thing, the right way, for the right reason. Did I mention that seconds before I was shot, an elderly African American gentleman walking down the sidewalk, turned to my partner and I as we rode past and said, ďGet them.Ē Get who you ask? The thugs terrorizing an otherwise good and decent neighborhood, home to dozens of good, decent African American families trying to raise those families in communities not protected by gates and security guards. No these folks and families depend on Americaís Law Enforcement Officers.

Colin I have buried 7 friends, killed in the line of duty and three others who have committed suicide. I have attended more funerals than I care to remember of neighboring departments who have lost officers in the line of duty, during my career. Law Enforcement Officers with different backgrounds, upbringings, and experiences united by their willingness to answer the call to protect and serve their fellow citizens.

Colin I am sorry for the endorsement deals you may lose and the dip in jersey sales, but please know you will NEVER lose what these men and women and their families have lost. And so whether you stand or sit during the National Anthem or not means very little to me. As for me and the men and women on whose team I was privileged to serve, we will put on our ballistic vests, badge, and gun, kiss our loved oneís goodbye, for some tragically for the last time, and out into a shift of uncertainty we will go. We will continue to protect and continue to serve and we will be standing at attention Colin, not just for the playing of our National Anthem, but far more importantly for the playing of Taps.

I think its time there was an open discussion on why the frum world has to go to such desperate measures for funds for yeshiva.

#1 the leadership is corrupt
#2 stop with fancy buildings if you have no money

etc.. I dont have solutions but witth this and sungames you can clearly see there is a sickness
3. Public funds (tzedukah) goes to the extravagant and  flashier events and gets consumed by overhead instead of going to our communal infrastructure.

Wha?

What does it mean at all? We teach children to Torah?

To me, it means we don't care as much about faithful transmission of the Torah as much as how the children feel.

I'm sure he would deny that this was his intention, but that's where the emotional pull comes from.
I understood it to mean "chanoch l'nar al pi darcho". If we have the perspective that we are  teaching children then they become the priority and we will do whatever is neccesary to ensure the children are learning.

But what should the rationalists do when they are indeed correct?

Or, how do you suppose we curb the rampant reliance on quack "medicine" and distrust of real doctors?
It's unfortunate that he is so busy using every opportunity to bash the "right wing" orthodox and the rabanim. This can actauly be an interesting debate and discussion. But the tone of his blog post distracts from meaningful conversation.
As an aside- did anyone else see the irony in him using the story of a girl who unfortunately lost her arm after not being vaccinated,  right after lambasting rabbis for solely following anectodle evidence ?

Re: Abortion = Murder?
You definitely are supposed to try to understand them and have them impact your life, but if you decide not to do something because you don't understand it or don't agree with it morally; then the Torah isn't changing you, you're changing the Torah. At the end of the day, the designer knows what makes the product tick better than the user. Rationalizing the Torah is wonderful, but if you conform it to fit your rationalization you're not a believer. Anybody who feels the need to apologize for G-d doesn't believe in him. As nice as the social justice aspects of religion are, if you think that's all G-d should or has the right to dictate you're a כופר.
Not sure why you quoted me, nothing that I said was addressed specifically with rationalizing the 2 cases being discussed here, I was presenting a general hashkafic outlook.
I would say though, that because we know that hashem is just and his mitzvos and the torah are meant to be a guide for us to become just, like him, that does raise a difficulty when there is a mitzvah that seems unjust. It's a flaw in our understanding but doesn't mean we cant be bothered by and question it, as long as it's the context of trying to gain a better understanding.
Thats not rationalizing It's comprehending and knowing god.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread

I am honestly SO not bothered at all by "alternative facts." I saw the clip where she said it. They were arguing about statistics. Statistics are the most deceptively weak form of argument precisely because they sound so solid but say so little. She was basically saying, "You can quote your numbers, and I am sure you have your sources, but we have different numbers." That, to me, is totally valid. To grab on to her saying "alternative facts" and to make hay of it is typical of the kind of sophomoric satire that the Left loves to engage in. Okay, we get it. She said the wrong words. We get it. It's over. Now you can go back to quoting Monty Python movies while milk squirts out of your nose. Nobody's laughing at your geeky humor anymore... oh, except I forgot, half the country who also thinks this is cool but doesn't even know why.

And this is precisely why people like me who don't even like Trump are rooting for him in his war against the media.
This is so true, I never thought I could tolerate trump, let alone cheer for him, but the way the media and liberals are reacting to his presidency make it impossible not to.

Walmart already won. Neither one is going to put the other out of business. Walmart's purpose is to make themselves a full fledged competition with Amazon. Mission accomplished. The question is how long they will continue it for added publicity.
Great point. I never would have even thought of purchasing these things at Walmart, let alone creating an account. Clearly they are the winner.

I find that DDF has many who are experts in all sorts of fields. DDF attracts people who think through how to get around roadblocks and find loopholes and workarounds. Such people are also likely to do the same in other aspects of their professional and personal lives. This will make their opinions about these topics valuable as well.

+1 on Town Appliance. I will add that I also have found that sometimes their prices have been slightly higher than some newcomers. Even so I never bothered with them. I find that the advice they give on the reliability of the products and their understanding of which features will be helpful in a kosher home are well worth the price. If I am taking their advice I will take their price.

Re: Car Lease v. Buying

I am at crossroads of about to either purchasing or lease a minivan. Can anyone help me figure out which I should go with? Which makes more sense financially??? TIA

2014 Toyato Sienna (pristine condition, 40k) $341 x 60 months - unlimited miles
2017 Chrysler Pacifica $277 x 36 months - 12k a year

Look at it this way, assumimg you can get the same lease deal (which is not at all a given) after 5 years leasing will cost you approx, 16,600 which is about 3800 less than buying.
But you'll be without a car, whereas if you purchased you can prob sell for 8-10k (in order to compare apples to apples we'll assume you put 12k/yr miles), which will bring your cost from 20,400 to approx 11,000. Add to that the diffrence in maintenance costs on a new car to a used car. On this case prob not so significant.
Bottom line is it'll prob cost about 1k more a year to lease.
Obviously, if you're willing to drive the sienna into the ground the savings by purchasing  will be greater.

Re: Are you smarter than a 1st grader?

Iím not. I am, however, the parent of a 6 yr old in the first grade. Sheís learning the basics of Common Core and I predict that will be a headache in the future.
Iíll say this- right now my daughter is learning English. Specifically- how to build a sentence. I would assume thatís what the homework sheet is about. Nouns...

It could be, I think part of the issue is that we as parents dont know what the lesson in school was that the homework is reviewing leaving us to try and deduce. Its the same issue with the new way they do math. Trust me, I can figure out what 8+4 is, but unless I know what the learning method of using "blocks" or whatever method they used that day, I'm clueless. Luckily my daughter is a good student and knows most of the info, but if she was struggling I'd be unable to help her.

Re: Women in Jewish magazines

In general, I think that the more promiscuous society gets, the more insular frum communities will become as a counter-measure. Think about it this way: normally you keep alcohol in plain view at home. However, if a family member has an alcohol problem, you will start to hide it. If his problem gets worse, you will throw it out and stop buying alcohol altogether. If it gets more extreme, you may throw out any magazines that have advertisements for alcohol and tell your family to not mention the word ďalcoholĒ at all etc..

Point is, womenís faces became ďnot tzniusĒ when society started shoving womenís bodies in peopleís faces.

That does not sound like a reasonable response. See chava for example of what happens when you make whats mutar assur.

Re: School Canceled due to...COLD !
It's likely just what the kids are prepared for. MSP kids have the proper winter attire for -10, CLE parents aren't buying their kids a new wardrobe for 1 day of -10, so schools cancel...

Miami kids don't play outside if it's 30 outside because they don't have the clothing for it... Same logic.
And in boca they send out this psa when the temp dips below 60:

Re: Why do some Jewish communities prohibit women from driving?
Beautifully said.

Unfortunately I've found that the concept you just stated exists only in chabad.
Or anywhere out side  of brooklyn and lakewood.
Its sad that we've  given the responsibility of chiniuch exclusively to the schools, to the extent that we can't  tolerate having someone in our kids schools that is  slightly diffrent than us.  we are paralyzed and have no way of imparting to our kids  what we believe  is important if they should c"v see something slightly diffrent.

Re: The Pros And Cons Of Where You Live

Wow, thanks so much for the quick responses! surprised no Cleveland suggestions  ;D
Too far (approx 1.5 hour commute to battery park, plus must take into account need to have second car to drive to closest station etc) also, LIRR commute is pretty expensive.
somewhat far (approx 1.2 hour commute to battery park), though not as costly as N Woodmere. also didnt get a great vibe for modox peeps when i visited (more of a frummer/black hat feel it seemed).
possibility, but is there a growing modox community?
I am not actually dying, just a lil sad that there arent better options in the tri-state area when i take a discerning gaze at the relevant communities.
I live in Willowbrook, Staten Island. I have a great commute to downtown (35/40 minutes on one express bus for $6.50 after metrocard bonuses), but modox community is dying and schools are weak (esp the lack of any high school options for girls on island).
I want a lot, but u would think an "in-town" area like NY would have a place with good schools in walking/short bus-ride distance, with 4br houses with basements (for guests) and backyards around $1m.
i would drive if it would save time but that seems unlikely. Was toying with living in 5 towns, getting an electric car and driving in the HOV lane on the LIE but not sure how fast that really is...

Oy, you shouldn't need to spend $1m for that. If you would be willing to compromise  a little on some of those requirements.
I paid less than half of that, I have 4 bedrooms, finished basement with a guest suite, over a 1/4 acre property. But I'm not walking distance to schools. We also wouldnt consider our community a mo communtiy although we are very welcoming to all people.

Re: Do you Daven?
I heard of an exercise to do with children to help them grow in their attachment to Hashem that I found to be helpful as an adult.
Each day write down something good that Hashem has done for you. (I recently read that writing 3 good things down each day, helps grow a good attitude.)
Each day write down something you did that shows your 'strength' - an accomplishment or 'kovesh es yitzro' type of action.
When you pay attention, you see how Hashem is with you every step of the way.  This may help some people have more energy to daven.
This is something we try to do with our kids too, with a slight variation,  we talk about the best and worst part(s) of everyone's day. It definitly helps the kids  (and myself) gain perspective. It also is a great catalyst for meaningful conversation with your kids and helps get some insight into how they feel. If I would just ask them how thier day was, I'd get a one or two word amswer.

Well. You actually posted two ads, for two different programs, AND NEITHER OF THEM LISTS THE NAME OF THE HASHGOCHO! (except if Zika Free is the latest Badatz Mehadrin...).

The fact that such programs fill up without even feeling the need to put a reputable name that people can rely upon for the Kashrus on Pesach is simply amazing.
Why are you assuming no one inquires about thr hashgacha when they call for more info? There's also no pricing on the smillow ad, do you question how people can go to these programs withoit even knowing what its going to cost them?
