Destination Guides And Trip Planning / Re: Sydney Master Thread
« on: September 05, 2019, 10:26:05 PM »
Personally I'd fly into MEL, drive the GOR and stay on the GOR, stay at the PH MEL for shabbos and eat next door at Chabad, and fly to SYD on Sunday and stay at the PH and hit up the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, etc.

Your trip itinerary would be L'chat-chila. I'm at the B'di-eved stage.

Hyatt Regency in the CBD- near the shul? Online reviews of the place are eh.
Other options?

Shabbos in Sydney is fine. you can stay in city center and daven at Great Synagogue, either buy food in advance from Bondi or arrange hospitalty through shul.
You can also stay in Bondi where there are many shuls. Few hotels in Bondi, eg Adina Serviced Apartments (which used to be a jewish sports club with decent kosher restaurant, RIP).

I just returned from a week in Sydney, staying with family. Plenty to keep kids amused. Can recommend Taronga Zoo (by ferry from Circular Quay) or Sydney Zoo and Aqarium at Darling harbor (walk from city). I got discounted rates from ,zoo + aquarium cost around AUD 45 (USD 30) combined per adult, AUD 30 for kids.
Lots of day trips if weather is OK.
Kosher options in Bondi pretty good - Katzys, Pita Mix, Savion, Jesse's were all good and reasonably priced (compared to Israel..).

Food options in supermarkets have improved - loads of dips available in all supermarkets (even Uluru/Ayers Rock), Hummus/Avocado, Egg Salad etc. Yumi brand with Australia Kosher symbol.

Any q's let me know.

Thanks for your input.

Have some, not a ton of Hyatt points. (Would love to stay at PH)
Is Hyatt Regency a decent option in the city center? Walking distance to Great Synagogue or any other shul?
Any shuls have Shabbos meals available?

Looking for advice on how to spend 5 days in Sydney.
I read up the TR's. No recent postings, however.
Any specifics on where to stay and where to eat that will also be good for Shabbos?
If I stay at PH or the other Hyatt downtown what options are there for Shabbos minyan?
Don't want to rent a car. TIA

Trip Reports / Re: yitzy93's 3-Day Rome Trip Report.

Your TR much appreciated.

Have a 1 day stopover planned in Rome on the way to Israel.
Arriving 7AM and leaving at 1045PM that night.

Want to prearrange airport taxi pickup.
Any suggestions who to use?
Finding rates for 65 Euro for our party of 6.

Phone service for the day-what do people use?
Need it primarily for Israel.

ATM use-is the airport a good place to withdraw Euros?
What is ATM availability in the Ghetto?

Return trip to the airport has me concerned from the Ghetto. Suggestions as a good pickup point and who to use?
My Taxi/Uber?

Can you give a rundown of the pros and cons?
It's a lot further away from J'lem!

In Kfar Kedem, we got dressed up (like in Eretz Bereishit)
rode donkeys, sat in a tent and ate the Pitot we baked.
On both occasions, we had a private group.
It was 10+ and 14 yrs ago when we went.
We had a much younger group of children at Kfar Kedem (14 yrs ago)-very pleasant overall. (our youngest was over a year)
The guide at Eretz Bereishit was less warm in his role.
Our stop at Kfar Kedem was on our way up north.
Eretz Bereishit was on our way down south.

Can you give a rundown of the pros and cons?

Have done both Eretz Bereishit and Kfar Kedem.
Kfar Kedem was better IMHO.

Gangaroo on my list again. No koala bear, though.
They sleep most of the day away, anyway.
Planning to do both again this summer with my 8 yr old.

Up In The Air / Re: Hidden City Ticketing in Europe and Suitcases

Saved $100 on the ticket.

There was a DDMS post yesterday about this.

It's wasn't the cheapest way to TLV but we wanted a long layover in Paris (17hrs)
for a one day trip.

I have a flight on TAP from NYC to FRA with a connection on LIS. Due to the recent terrorism in Germany, I (aka my wife) have decided to switch my trip to Geneva, Switzerland. Instead of taking an 8 hour train from Frankfurt to Geneva, I would rather just book a ticket from LIS to GVA, thereby creating a hidden city ticket (although that was not my original intention).

I know that in the USA, all suitcases from international flights are unloaded and claimed at the first point of arrival, and then re-checked onto any connecting flights. Is that also the case in Europe? If not, and if I book the new ticket on TAP as well, would I be able to ask that the suitcases be checked directly to GVA, or at least unloaded at LIS?

And I already tried calling TAP, but I couldn't even get a rep on the phone. An automated message literally told me that they are too busy now, and that I should call back later. I read that TAP is pretty bad airline, but I hope that this experience is not a harbinger of what is to come.

Thanks for any help and suggestions!!

Similar question regarding luggage:
AF JFK to CDG RT and   AF CDG to TLV RT were booked as 2 different AF reservations on priceline

The flight from TLV to CDG has a 1:50 stopover in CDG before continuing onto to JFK.

In TLV, will AF tag your bag to JFK or do you have to claim your bag at CDG to get it to JFK?
If so, is 1:50 enough time to do that?
Please advise as I can still cancel this reservation today.
