Deals/Deal Requests / Virgin Atlantic sale
« on: September 11, 2015, 01:20:52 AM »
Virgin Atlantic is running one of their 20% sales on award redemptions through September 23rd.
These can be very good prices for economy or economy plus, especially for flights departing from the USA. ORD/NYC - LHR = 14k miles +$140 in economy. There are no blackout dates for the sale.

DDMS HT? ;)

Up In The Air / United trip protector
« on: June 19, 2015, 06:59:41 AM »
I have searched but could not find this topic addressed.
I need to make a United award TATL flight - 30K + approx $200.
I am not 100% sure that I will be able to make the trip however I am hoping to and I don't want to be stuck with no availability when I want to travel. If i purchase the travel protection for $27, will that cover the cancellation and redepositing miles fee ($150 I believe), or just the taxes and fees paid for the ticket?

ETA: I am booking a OW with AA miles from the USA to the UK and a OW return with the United points. Will using a specific CC for the taxes and fees on either/both of those flights give me medical coverage while in the UK? And does that card account have to be in the name of the passenger?

ETA#2: I found out that this insurance would cover all charges however it would only be in case of emergency...
Anyone have answer to medical coverage question?

Credit Cards / foreign exchange fee
« on: December 14, 2014, 02:26:55 PM »
Which is the best card to use for transactions abroad? Obviously one without a FE fee but which bank gives the best exchange rate?
In my experience it SEEMS that chase was giving a better rate that Barclay. Still has to be verified 100%. Whats other people's experience?
(I cant find this discussed elsewhere on the forum)

Up In The Air / Luftansa Israel Address
« on: May 05, 2014, 03:09:56 PM »
In a recent post, Dan mentioned that you get better mileage prices for award travel with Lufthansa m&m if you are registered in Israel.
Does that mean that I (I live in the US) can make myself an account with Lufthansa using a relatives address in Israel, and then make a Lufthansa CC using my actual home address in the US and still be able to link the accounts etc?

Up In The Air / Air Tran Travel Voucher
« on: June 11, 2012, 10:09:17 PM »
I have an AirTran non transferable voucher for 2 round trip to any of their destinations.
The only way to use one of them for someone else to travel is to use one of them for myself and then they will allow me to use the 2nd for a companion.
As they are soon to expire and I have no travel plans, I was wandering if I can book a ticket with a friend and just not show at the airport? Will they allow my "companion" to travel by himself? or will they cancel the whole thing?

Up In The Air / oversized boxes
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:59:52 AM »
I have tried searching this but couldn't find anything definitive.
I would like to send a box to from NY to UK. The dimension of the box is 66 inches (weight - 17 pounds). The official limit (on AA - not sure about all airlines) is 62 inches.
1) How strict are they if it's just a few inches over?
2) In general do they allow cardboard boxes to be checked in no problem?
Anyone with any advice?

Up In The Air / Milage to Australia
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:30:58 PM »
We are a whole family flying from London to Australia with Cathay Pacific. (The way there is class V, the return is class H).
What is the best thing to do with the miles?
Put them on an AA advantage account? (Which would mean opening and starting an account for everyone).
Open a Cathay Pacific account?
Is there a way to post all the miles onto 1 account?
