Re: Chase Sapphire Reserve
and all the pre-approvals? Just seems deceptive if you are writing a definitive statement to not hold by it.

I assume in branch pre-approvals won't have this language on them. Kind of like how some AmEx targeted offers don't have their limiting language. Should make it easier to know with Chase!

Hey, @doctorofcredit, we added a 'like' system over here. You gotta try to get likes so people will know you are reliable.

Thanks for the tip, I will add a desperate plea for likes at the end of each post.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now! I think the problems here are

1. People who are quick to judge things just because they are different, or new

2. People not explaining themselves well and just saying "its bad" when they may mean other things.

I myself also think that there is something distasteful IN GENERAL to this whole idea of what Pesach hotels have become. But I think it's  a problem in America in general with the chase for luxury in extreme.  And when you combine that with the idea of YomTov it can sometimes leave you with a bad taste.

I don't have an issue with people doing things different.   Yes, there is something to be said for tradition but as the world evolves we'll always have things changing in different ways to the way things were done.

There are plenty of Pesach programs that are more "heimeish" if you will. And there are plenty of people going to Pesach hotels that are anything but heimish and are still there in the right spirit and I'm sure having a seder just as meaningful as some guy sitting at home.

And as a side note there  are plenty of people who can't make Pesach for various reasons and plenty of people who ONLY KEEP pesach because there are Pesach programs etc.

I think the issue I have is more with our GENERAL focus of things that shouldn't be our main focus and this 'chase' for bigger, better, nicer that plagues our society at large.  This is just one example of where we see it.   So you have people looking at all the ads feeling like this is all wrong.

And then there folks who just think anything done different than what's always been done is "wrong"  -

I think that a program that could allow for people to do their own cooking with their own food

They have those already. 95% of practicing yidden participate in those actually.

Re: Pesach Program in Greece Cancelled Just Now!
I'll just assume this post was completely facetious and be done. To say that those of us who oppose the hotels, sound jealous... It sounds like you don't understand life because money pays for anything that comes up. Your kids understand preparing for YT because they hear about it from their friends?! Wow.

It was nebech not facetious. Money pays for everything. Of course I'm jealous that i cant lay back and let someone else do the hard work. But I'm also grateful that I can and do contribute. Not only my wife works hard I do too. And when you sit down to the seder with a feeling of accomplishment, there is nothing like it. I cannot imagine what it would be like sitting down after having written that check or swiped that card and not having lifted a finger in preparation for yom tov. I would probably be sick to my stomach. Thats subjective.

Yes murder is a legal term.

Come on, you know how people are using the term, and it has nothing to do with legalities. This is an example of what I mean by arguing in bad faith.

Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others
I am not a lawyer, but I worked for several years in a company that did equity investment loans. As is part of the business, some of the companies we invested into defaulted on the loans. We spent a lot of time taking these companies and individuals to court. We won some, we lost some, and in the process learnt a lot about how the legal system works.

I suspect that some of the victims of this Kingston Ave merchant might be reading this forum, so I will just say a few things:

1. When it comes to unsecured loans, courts of law operate on a first-come-first-serve basis. It also very much follows the Talmudic logic of כל דאלים גבר. In short, if any of the victims decide to lawyer up and go to court, they will be first in line to collect and seize assets (assuming there are any to seize). Other parties can try to rush to court to intervene and that may or may not be effective.

2. Victims with more money to spare are at a clear advantage. They can hire good lawyers and file a case. If any of these victims sustained more than $75,000 in losses then they can file a case in Federal court and even go as far as to ask for a preliminary injunction and have the merchant’s warehouse and other assets seized. Once this happens, everyone else in line can be screwed.

3. If you are a victim, you must immediately get an exact accounting of the merchant’s assets. You must find out if he has secured loans, because if he does then they are first in line no matter what.

4. As others have mentioned, if he declares bankruptcy, your money will unfortunately not be recovered. Under bankruptcy there is a specific order of who gets paid first, second third etc. first goes the court receiver, then taxes, then wages, then secured lenders, and then if there is anything left, unsecured lenders. There is usually nothing left for unsecured lenders. This is on top of the fact that this process can take several years and the credit card interest might not be sustainable for some victims.

5. Not every lawyer is a good lawyer. Thousands of lawyers graduate every year and many of them are dumb as a doorknob. Try to find a lawyer with experience in this specific field and ask around for references.

6. Don’t assume that all victims are trying to help each other out. At the end of the day everyone is going to look out for their own skin. This sounds morbid, but some of the bigger, friendlier victims can hammer out a private deal with the merchant that will leave the smaller guys in the dirt.

Again, if you are a victim you must independently find out exactly what the merchant has. He could have squandered this money on something and his assets could be a quarter of what he took.

If everyone recovers their money from this it will be a miracle.

Do not rely on anything I wrote here. Consult with a competent lawyer.

Re: PSA: Don't swipe recklessly for others
Ruining your credit is serious, buying a house, car, what about if you start a business ?!

Personally I would be opposed to dating / marrying someone with bad credit .

There are a lot more serious things in life than one's credit. Yes, keeping a good credit score (and no outstanding debt) is an excellent thing, and the right thing, but there's more to life than that. I wish upon no-one the נסיונות that I've heard from friends and family, but when those happen, one has to forget about good credit, and do what's right for the נשמות involved.

There's life after bad credit, there's life after financial disaster. Other problems or issues could be much greater and life altering (or C"V ending - see silent killer thread). Or as a friend and neighbor once put it: Any problem that could be solved with money is not a real problem!

Re: Adding Financial Literacy Courses In Yeshivas
And you don’t feel that practical modern day personal finance is comprehensively covered?
No. By the time someone would have a good enough understanding of halacha and Torah to be able to apply that to the modern day fiscal world, he would be past the point where he would have needed the information. Especially with the way yeshivos are now where most of the learning is abstract, and most of the emphasis is not on halacha, it's hard to take the concepts that you learn and apply them to your everyday life. I'm not saying we shouldn't be better in how we teach Torah and halacha, I'm saying that it's our responsibility to set kids up to succeed in the modern world. We need to give kids a solid foundation in emuna, Torah, halacha, etc, and also teach them how to succeed in the modern financial world. I don't understand why people have such a strong aversion to the idea of teaching a fiscal responsibility course. Is it because it will take away time from limud Torah? You think Hashem would rather the kid learn during that short amount of time but then put his whole family into debt for years because he doesn't understand how anything works?
Besides, even if you're right that everything can be gained from proper limud Torah, clearly the way our system is right now, we're not doing it correctly. What would be easier, setting up financial literacy courses in schools or completely overhauling our entire way of limud Torah? It's as if you'd all rather have kids continue to grow up financially clueless than have teach them anything about the world that doesn't come from a mishna. We have a problem in our community, the amount of linud torah being done today isn't it, it's our inability to mesh torah judiasm with the modern world in the correct way.

Re: Over The Top Purim Parties Here is what is flawed with these letters and discussions that come up every so often:
There are always going to be people doing over the top things with their money. I think most of us want one thing; we want our kids growing up valuing what the Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva do more than the decadent lifestyle of those living it up. The only way to do that is to stop hyperfocusing on the wealthy. I get nauseous when I hear people talking and every 3rd sentence has the word “gvir”. Even if it’s bashing them your kids will grow up knowing that you pay a lot more attention to “the gvirim” than to Rabbonim. Negative attention is also attention. You can be learning and even be mechaber seforim, but if your kids get the sense that you are not perfectly happy with your lifestyle and instead are focused on “the gevir” nothing you say to them will change that perception.  You are modeling for them with your behavior, and actions always speak louder than words.

If you want your kids growing up being machshiv torah and learning as a priority in life, talk about it constantly. Ignore the wealthy and their lifestyles. Your kids will learn to do the same. If you want to broaden their hasagos beyond learning talk about the neighbor who gives hours of his time to deliver for tomchei shabbos. The guy who volunteers to put away the seforim in shul.  The gemach down the block. The countless other baalei chessed that your kids can emulate without writing a six figure check. And you will be modeling for your kids what excites you. What you are machshiv. And most importantly, if you can show your kids that you are truly happy with the lifestyle you have you’re kids will want the same.

Re: A lesson from Italy ?! Rabbanim wake up!! I don't lay blame on rabbanim. Their job is not to be doctors or infectious disease specialists. If local doctors and government agencies had put rules in place weeks ago, or at least before Purim, rabbanim could have enacted rules accordingly. Instead we got silence and now people are complaining that minyanim aren't being shut down while alternate side parking is still in effect.

The rabbanim who are not following guidelines are few and far between. It's the guidelines coming from the government that have been insufficient.

Re: Tzara’as and Coronavius What is astounding to me is that klal yisroel is experiencing arguably the biggest upheaval of its kind in 2000 years- never have the batei kineisoyos, batei midrashos, and batei sefer been shuttered ACROSS THE GLOBE simultaneously ( there was always המחנה הנשאר לפליטה)- and all everyone is talking about is what to cook for pesach!

HELLO, Hashem is calling out loud and clear; his handiwork is all over this. What the message is is beyond my pay grade but you better believe there is a message and it is not the message that 7.5 billion people on this planet are taking from it. It is a message squarely directed at a tiny nation called Klal Yisroel.

Anybody with brains understands that this has the potential to be a momentous occasion, hopefully an eis ratzon if we are zoche with our tefillos, or Chas veshalom....

Bottom line is we are in a stupor and we had better wake up.
