Re: Scammed by a DDF'er on the DD forums!
Right. "Hi, Amex. I paid $13 for DDSCLE and I enjoyed the refreshments, learned ways to earn $5K each year, and ways to save an additional $20K on vacations.
However, I only met AussieBochur and one of Dan's brothers so I'm not satisfied with DDSCLE and need to do a charge back."    ::)
Or this "Hi, Amex. I paid $13 for DDSCLE to hear Benny sing. All I got was some joker talking about travel hacking. I need to do a chargeback."

Yehuda57's Brooklyn DDS TR June 2014 Like most good TRs around here, this is long overdue. Unlike most good TRs around here, however, this won't have any useful information in it.

I booked my ticket early, so as to secure a good rate. To pay, I left NYC to find a grocery store at which to buy a VGC using my Freedom card during the grocery store bonus period. I loaded the GC into Bluebird, with which I paid for a money order to pay with PayPal as an eCheck.

The long awaited day arrived! I took an Uber to the airport to pick up my SilverCar, which I had booked using 8 stackable coupon codes. The total cost for the day: -$17.44. Dan had already earned me more than $5.

I parked the car in Manhattan using the Icon discount from DDMS, and got another Uber to the Seminar. I was travelling with my older brother, who would think Noi Due is Chinese, Pardes is where only four have entered, and Mike's is probably a mechanic. But he was hungry, and so he settled for the closest food to the seminar - which was at some hole in the wall whose name now escapes (more than a year later.)

The salad he got looked like it belonged at this kinda table:

I got one of these:

It was good.

Then it was time to hit the seminar! As we arrived, we saw it was crowded. Chairs were being pulled out of everywhere to try accommodate the crowd. We were ready for this; it was time for our secret weapon: Plan B.

We went to the check in rep to show our tickets and explain our preferred seating requests, but alas, he had as much interest in our tickets or PR1 status as Dan has for Spirit miles.

At this point someone shouted out, "Does anyone have any cash? I need coins for the meter." Everyone laughed uproariously - I don't know why.

Before we took our seats we were shown the meal selection, which consisted of items such as these:

Looking for something to wash them down with, I made my way to the drinks table and was met with utter disappointment and horror. The soft drink selection was entirely Be'er Chaim. Angrily, I stormed back to the check in rep, who was still half asleep, and demanded he heat up my Pom BYOK. Instead of heating it up, he stared at me for a second and went back to playing candy crush.

I wasn't looking for short ribs, mac n cheese balls or a BLT, I just wanted a non kosher-brand soda. Is that too much to ask for around here?

My disappointment turned to jubilation as Dan graced the stage, and began to enthrall us with the tale of how he had booked his flight to NYC that very day AFTER the plane had already pulled away from the gate. Something to do with living in Cleveland, he can just meet the plane on the tarmac, or something. Oh, and he avoided the United close-in fee by <CENSORED>

The next few hours were filled with tips, tricks and knowledge, like how to <CENSORED> on Priceline and how to <CENSORED> on <CENSORED>, and then something about Avianca, but I don't understand Spanish.

I was upset that he didn't cover some topics, like RedCard, but I realize that's because Target doesn't have a seminar affiliation program. and he's only in it for the big bucks.

He also neglected to mention the upcoming Etihad glitch, though I got that message on 84 different WhatsApp groups anyway. Dan intimated that it was ok to fly airlines other than ELAL to Israel, which proves his inherent Anti Semitisim, and he also mentioned travelling with his wife - which I found inappropriate.

These misgivings notwithstanding, I truly enjoyed the main portion of the evening, and joined the crowd in asking for an encore. He gladly obliged us, though strangely by bursting into Yesh Tikvah.

It was now time for the Q and A, which is where I got to have an impromptu DO. Something Fishy (I knew it was him - he was 13 feet tall, had a camera around his neck, and a Go Pro mounted on his forehead) was chatting with a couple of guys, and missed a question from the crowd that caused Dan and many others to laugh. He asked me what the joke was, and I managed to repeat it, though hopelessly gushing at the chance to speak to this DDF hero. I was too shy to introduce myself as the 57th Yehuda on the forum, but he wouldn't have recognized the name in any case.

Before I finish this TR, I want to say thank you to Dan for the seminar and DD - apart from the glitches I have taken advantage of - Expedia to Vegas,  Delta to LAX, Etihad to JNB (I booked but had to cancel Elal to TLV), My family and I have accrued millions of points which have enabled us to create family reunions and memorable vacations which we most certainly would not have been able to without DD. I seriously cannot thank you enough.

And thanks to all the helpful folk here on DDF for putting up with my questions, and sharing so much knowledge.

BWAAAA! I just spit my drink!

I love it! Dude, as far as this discussion goes, not only is Lakewood considered NY, NMB is considered NY.

It's like Rav says in Gittin that Bavel is like Eretz Yisrael for "b'fanai nichtav."

I mainly use tapa and can't see which posts are being liked. I frankly find the like button distracting/annoying when I'm on a desktop
Color of outer box is somewhat distracting, maybe it could be lighter.

Overall I like the like button, as it adds somewhat of a credibility to a poster, similar to what other forums have.

Re: Anyone here watch Suits?
I'm asking in the next episode.
I think/hope so. I agree with SS it'll be stupid if they don't, once they told Rachel and she freaked they couldn't be mean enough to make it not happen... Anyway only 2 more episodes until the break so it'll be this one or the next for sure.

The last episode wast the first ok episode all season. No way they can get renewed if this keeps going.

Maybe they will end it with 4 wedding, Jessica moves to Chicago with Jeff, Louis marries Tara, obviously Mike and Rachel get married, and finally Harvey and Donna get hitched as well. And they all live happily ever after. Mike, Harvey, Louis, and Rachel open their own new firm, Mike is the paralegal this time and Donna is of course the one running the place.

What's the best program to credit miles from this flight to?
US Airways. It's good because it's one of the only airlines you can status match to LY.

Re: Proofread DDMS Posts In Advance... I would clarify that the 50% rebate is on 1 airline that you choose in the beginning and that some people have had success changing it but YMMV so choose wisely. I would also clarify that they deduct the entire amount of points and then add half the points back so you must have the entire amount of points in your account.

Freedom unlimited offers 15,000 points and an additional 2,500 for opening an AU, the way you worded it, it seems like you need to add the AU to get any points, same for regular freedom.
Also SR doesn't need to add an AU for the sign up bonus (it's actually probably a bad idea )
Other than that, everything looks good.

Re: Selling Bose wireless QC35
This only time MR are worth more than $.01/point are when you're redeeming them...if they are sitting in your account with no intention of flying or staying in hotels then they are worth $.01/point.

My point is not advocating an optimal redemption, but for those with no future travel plans and looking to cut costs around the holidays, this is an option that's available.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread
One of us is experiencing cognitive dissonance. Here's why I think it's you.

He said "they let you do it." The imagery I get from that is that, as a famous person, he can be more forward and take more risks than other people because he's pretty sure he won't be rejected. I don't see any indication that, if he does get rejected by a woman, he would continue touching her against her will.

Even the women who've come forward say he touched them "without permission." Most socially normal people don't ask permission first. They look for signals. He interprets signals more often than regular people because he gets them more often than regular people.

I'm warning you to stop. Just stop. You don't have to defend sexual assault to explain why you support Trump. You can support Trump for any reason you want. Even just for the hell of it. I'm fine with that. But for the love of G-d, please do not force yourself to rationalize sexual assault. Walk away from this one.

"They let you do it" should send chills down the spine of anyone with a mother or a daughter or a sister or a wife. "They let you do it" is a sentiment completely lacking the slightest comprehension of the emotions of another human being. It doesn't matter if it's wealth, power, or fame, or a knife to your throat, "They let you do it" is not a defense against being labeled a total user but the very definition of it. Can you not see that? "They let you do it" is the defense of every child molester who grooms his victims rather than bashing them in the face and raping them. "They let you do it" is the defense of every frat boy who had sex with a drunk girl. "They let you do it" is the defense of every producer in Hollywood who uses aspiring actors for sex.

Sorry to be so blunt.

Re: 2016 Election Pick Your Poison Master Thread @JTZ - I apologize for the wall of text, but I feel this is important context to provide for the discussion.

Most of us on this forum are visibly Jewish. If we don't have beards and hats, we have kippas and tzitzis, etc. I would be surprised if the number of people here who have had an anti-Semitic experience is less than 100%. The stats show that Jews are on the receiving end of more hate crimes than any other group.

I've gotten middle fingers in Johannesburg, been spat on in Durban, and often walk over a swastika etched into the sidewalk near my in law's home in one of the Mid-Western United States. When I was in Yeshiva in Paris for a year, friends of mine where beaten up (This was almost 15 years ago - now it is MUCH worse).

I was spat on in an airport when I was 13. At least a dozen people saw it. The spitter was more than double my age. No one did or said a thing.
Those fist fights in Paris? Some were on full trains. Again, no one did or said a thing.

I have never reported a hate crime. No one I know ever has - and I know people who have experienced far more violent things then I have.

I live in Brooklyn, a truly liberal and hip city (Hilary Clinton's headquarters). Swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti are common occurrences - in alley ways, on subway platforms, and more.  When a group of thugs threw rocks at a school bus filled with little Jewish kids it didn't even make local news. A Chassidic guy was left unconscious under a car one night after a spate of anti-Semitic events - it only made the news when a few hundred of us marched to the precinct the next day.

You know what made news? When a swastika was painted the day after Trump won.

Weird, huh?

That Muslims and Neo-Nazis beat us is to be expected. But, in a sense, you know what is worse? Leftist, liberal self-righteous hypocrites who find it ok to mock, ridicule and antagonize "Ultra-Orthodox Right Wing Fundamentalist" Jews - while throwing fits of rage at every perceived micro-aggression against any other minority or race.

For example:

Gentrification is a big deal. Neither I nor any of my friends can afford to buy a home in our neighborhood. Renting an apt is nigh impossible. But whenever you read or hear about gentrification in Crown Heights, you will find out about Chassidic Landlords (Slumlords) who are mistreating and pushing out the Black community.  Of course lower and middle class blacks are being pushed out. So are the Jews! But it is ok for the media to paint the Chassidic community with the broad anti-Semitic brush of being hook nosed landlords cheating the poor blacks out of their money and homes. In actuality, it is market forces being driven by young artisanal, hipster farm-to-table vegans which are responsible.

This anti-Semitic attitude directly contributes to the violent antisemitism I sampled above, just as Al Sharpton’s “diamond merchant” rhetoric led to riots and murder.

This is just one tiny example that I deal with in NYC, one of the largest concentrations of visible Jews on the planet, in the shining pride of Western civilization. In other places, it is far, far worse. (Look at Jeremy Corbyn in the UK for a start, and we can go from there.)

So that's why we don't care about hate crime stats. We know firsthand that they don't even begin to tell the story. That's why we are so skeptical of leftists and the media speaking of hate crimes - we have a long history of them not only ignoring hate crimes committed against us, but agitating and prodding those who do us actual harm.

Jan 2017 CLE-LAX-OGG – Maui Family Trip Booked multi-city trip using United miles for 5 of us (+1 infant on lap). CLE-LAX Friday, then LAX-OGG Sunday, OGG-CLE with stopover in DEN the following Sunday. Somehow I was only charged 22.5K miles for each ticket round-trip! I couldn't believe it at first but just let it be and left a reserve of miles in the account in case they were to charge me the whole 45K. UA never did despite a couple free schedule changes due to timetable variations over the months. If someone can explain this to me I’m all ears. It was a pleasant surprise because now I have enough miles to get all 6 of us somewhere domestic for our next trip.

1. CLE-LAX on Friday morning and stayed with relatives in Oxnard. Very relaxing Shabbat by the beach. Budgeted a little time to hang out at the new UA lounge in LAX. Kids loved the outdoor terrace and could have watched the planes coming and going for hours. Rented a cheap minivan from Advantage Car. Saved a ton using Advantage but it wasn’t pretty and took forever.

2. LAX-OGG Sunday afternoon and landed around 6PM in OGG. We stayed in a VRBO condo in Kihei for around $170 per night and it fit all 6 of us nicely. Kashered a few things in the kitchen and went to Target and Costco to stock up on food. The Safeway in the area unfortunately had no Kosher meat so we went without for the week. Costco had kosher cheese.

3. Monday we didn’t do anything except relax on the beach and let the kids play. We also went in the pool.

4. Tuesday also relatively laid back. Drove (with our rented minivan from Advantage) to Lahaina and did the reef dancer tour for an hour with the kids ($122 for all of us). Since we weren’t scuba diving or doing much snorkeling I thought we needed to at least see the reef somehow. It was really great. There was also a playground there with a huge Banyan tree. That entertained everyone for a couple more hours.

5. Wednesday we did the drive to the summit of Haleakala and stopped several times on the way. There was a great lavender farm (called Alii Kula, thanks Maui Revealed) with a scavenger hunt for the kids. It was beautiful. We stopped on the way up to play in the clouds. Literally. Kids loved that. We didn’t do the sunrise but the view during the day was still amazing.

6. Thursday was the road to Hana. My kids (9, 6, 4, 1.5) are awesome travelers and loved this. We didn’t do many of the amazing hikes I read about but we did stop every 30 min or so to look at waterfalls or stop at random coconut vendors. We also drove down to the little neighborhood of Nahiku. Our big stop was the black sand beach and surrounding lava tubes. Super fun! Almost got washed out by the tide. Towards the end of the day the kids were exhausted and fell asleep while I drove the back way around the whole road to hana. You need to be very confident in your ability to drive and negotiate with other cars to do this!

7. Friday. Just relaxed. Hung out by the beach and went swimming.

8. Saturday. Same as Friday.

9. Sunday. OGG-DEN-CLE. Had almost a 4 hour layover in DEN but thanks to the United Club card we had a nice time hanging out in the UA lounge. The kids slept on the floor. No family room there unfortunately.

Bottom line, it was an amazing trip! Totally doable with kids if you set your expectations right. I have cheap Android tablets that they only get to use for 4+ hour traveling so that zombied them out most of the flying.

Thank you all for the tips and tricks and especially Dan who got me into this game 10 years ago. Our annual winter vacations would not have been possible without all of you. Being Orthodox and sending your kids to private school can really drain the budget. But I always say that no one can take my miles! :) Till next time.

Re: What Are You Eating?
that's the way to do it....

Anyone here ever had fresh fish
What I mean is Caught yourself cut open and take a piece of Sashimi
Many times.

This one time in Penang Malaysia, I was trying to find something lekovod shabbos but there was absolutely no kosher food to be found. An hour before shabbos, I had given up on the search and am riding my moped on the way back to the guest, I see an old man fishing at the pier. I stop and look into his bucket and sure enough, there's a beautiful parrot fish swimming around in there. Its got the scales & fins so I offer him $1 and he agrees. On my way back to the guesthouse I get lost in thought, trying to figure out what to do now as there's no time to light a fire or kasher a BBQ. Suddenly, I see a mechanic working on a motorcycle at a repair shop. I stop and ask him if I can borrow his blow-torch, he gives me his torch and his mouth dropped when he sees me pull out a brightly colored parrot fish from my bag. I sliced it open, fillet it and grilled it with the torch. Made it back to the guesthouse with plenty of time to spare before zman.

The fish tasted amazing BTW (not the best i've had, but definitely elevated my shabbos)

Has anyone else ever tried Parrot Fish?
