Since no one answered your question I will give it a shoot. 4.5k vs 1.2k
As you can see a 69 is worth about the same as an ungraded coin still in its sealed box.

For PF70 vs 69, or hand signed vs not hand signed?

I don't think it needs to be sealed if you send it within the first 30 days of release.

So then what is the issue with opening the box if you are having it graded?

I am far from an expert. I deal in PM not these coins. AFAIK there is no second seal. I have not opened one of these but have opened others and there was no seal.To someone that trusts you did not have it graded.

What is PM?
So if I'm keeping it, would you recommend just keep it sealed forever, or pay the $150 or so fee to have it graded?

@CountValentine you seem to be the resident expert.  Can I open the USPS box - is there another internal seal that will still make this be a "sealed" coin?  Not selling the coin just curious to see it...  May want to grade it, not sure on that yet.

Assuming hes not a coin collector, that should be sufficient for him. I'm assuming he has no idea how much the FMV is now.

He literally knows the entire red coin book by heart, and spends all of his (granted, minimal) income on coins...

Meh. Looking at it as a $1000 opportunity cost (if this is what reputable dealers are now paying) is more accurate than a $70 investment IMHO.

It’s not dissimilar to other people’s commitment sagas, I bought the coin under the premise that I’d be giving up maybe $200 profit to get him a cool coin, my pleasure; never thought it would go up in value like it has. I told my son I had ordered it for him, now I should say never mind you can’t have it?  If I didn’t have enough money to pay for gas and groceries, I probably would. But I am not in that position right now.

It is just me but for the small investment I would let him keep it.

Yeah, I say it's a $70 gift, he says no it's a $1000 gift.... I already said he can keep it, so I'm going to keep my word.  But it's an interesting question.

Curious what the more seasoned collectors on this forum think (since i'm not poking around on other forums) - is this coin going to decline in value because what's driving it now is hype, or should it more or less be stable at the prices people are now buying it?

DH does NOT think we should be allowing our son to keep this coin!!!
