Laptop Deals Master Thread I'm looking for good serviceable 15.6 inch (or bigger) laptop in the $250-$450 range due to the holiday season, normally priced $400-$600.
I want it to be useful for browsing the internet, word, excel and quickbooks. Preferably 3gb or more and duel-processer or better.

Dan usually posts on the main site ,the $1300 ones that are on sale for $800. I'm looking for a lower end one, but a good deal nevertheless.

If you see one on sale, or one that will be on black friday, please post it here. Thanks

New Coin Deal is anyone going to get in on this coin deal!

I saw PFS sent out an email for it!

Dear

We have a new coin deal - with a profit of $105.05 per household - for tomorrow!

Unlike prior deals in which we used Google Forms etc, we have invested time and money to build a website which will not only simplify the process for you, but it will also be extremely transparent and outline the entire process clearly.

We have taken the past deal information that you have given us, and have set up an account for you. We need you to activate the account and confirm your information.

Important - If you have multiple US Mint accounts - we would like to merge that into one Member profile so the contact information can be consolidated. So if you got this email to two or more email addresses please notify us so we can merge the accounts into one.

Once you activate the account, you will be able to view the current deal and opt in for it.

Please follow this link to activate your account and set your password.

Thanks!

Re: Jewish Music (New CDs, hock, and opinions) Even though this thread is virtually dead, I’m going to review DDF’s own Sibling Singer, Shmueli Ungar’s debut album, Shmueli 2.

I first heard of Shmueli in a DDF thread asking for recommendations for a wedding singer:

my brother is friggin AWESOME
Shmueli Ungar: 845.248.8723
he sings at all types of weddings (and bar/bat mitzvas, sheva brochos, events, concerts, etc). Usually in chassidishe havura (sp?) charges $1400-$1600 depending on location (obviously not including overtime, mitzvah tantz, or chupah but is negotiable).

I’m snarky by nature, so I scoffed at the comment, thinking, “Don’t we all think our brothers are awesome singers. Maybe he’s good enough to sing at your wedding.” (Full disclosure: My brother, who has made an appearance on this forum, is an awesome singer. No, he didn’t sing at my wedding. No, he isn’t putting out an album. No, he isn’t on YouTube.)

Anyway, I clicked on the video, and the dude can sing! My surprised reaction to his great voice was similar to this: (Language warning, goyish music warning, just warning you all round: https://youtu.be/_cw1uLVSl1Y)

As for the next video, Chazi, I’m responsible for most of those 50,000 views. Duly chastised, I vow never to dismiss claims of sibling excellence by DDFers ever again – at least until I am disappointed. (Like if a brother gives away exclusive DDF rights for United Club Pass Sales)

Anyway, we know he can sing, and he put out an album. Is it any good?

In short: Yes.

If you are a masochist, you can continue reading for a too-long music review by someone whose sole music-critic qualification is owning a keyboard.

While almost every album that comes out is billed as “fresh, modern, but keeping a Jewish sound,” - whatever that means, this album is old school. Much of the arrangements have the heavy brassy sound of Avraham Fried and MBD ‘80s' and ‘90s' albums. And that is not a bad thing. I’ve played the album on repeat in the background for the past couple of days, and it has been extremely pleasant listening.

Rachmuna is one terrific stand out – this stunning number goes beyond “easy listening” and grabs you. Forget humming along as it plays in the background; Rachmuna pulls you in with its beautiful melody and terrific vocals.

The album's opener, Emes, is one of the faster “pop” songs on the album, all of which are treated with synth arrangements. Shmueli’s vocal twists and shtick are fun and not overdone. You’ll hear more of that later, most notably in Yiten Lecha, where I most enjoyed them.

Lulei is a pretty sing-along song you’ll be foot tapping to at once. My one criticism is that like a few other songs on the album, it runs long. There are a few unnecessary musical interludes or overly repetitive verses (kavei kavei kavei kavei) that could have been cut so as to leave the listener wanting more, rather than looking for the skip button 5+ minutes in.

Ani Holech, like Yishoma, opens “cantorial” before switching to an up-tempo ballad (in Yishoma’s case, rock). Sure, you want to show off your vocal chops, but one song is fine. We get the point ;-). The song itself is enjoyable enough, nothing superlative, as are Asher Buchar and Mah Yisroin - unremarkable, albeit pleasant ballads, though the latter has the benefit of pretty modulation, which I'm a sucker for.

Oid Yishoma is a solid rock number that is already popular since being released as a single a few months back. We get a taste of Shmueli’s Dedi-like “vocal rev” as I like to call it – when his voice sounds like it is motorcycle revving its engine before diving into a chorus. Fun tune.

I’m not a complete boki in album liner notes, but I would guess Atu Huraisu is the first time Ilya Lishinsky gets a singing credit. And that’s what kind of song it is – heavy on synth and auto-tune. This cheesy-pop tune isn’t my favorite style, but it does enough to get by without me automatically skipping.

Yiten Lecha is a wonderfully fun, folksy song with an arrangement that rings country. Opening with Shmueli singing acoustic as if walking down the street is a nice touch, though it could have been even better had that blended into the arrangement. Had the song ended the way it started, or perhaps with a Carebachesque whistle, that would have been perfection!

The album closes with S’benkt (Yearnings), an emotive, beautiful ballad which departs from the verse-chorus-repeat formula to impart a meaningful musical narrative – to great effect.

In all, a solid debut. As mentioned previously, Rachmuna alone is worth the price of the album.

Shmueli’s impressive vocals, tasteful arrangements, and song selection that is free of any true clunkers are the perfect ingredients. I predict this is an album that won’t be shelved, and I’ll keep listening even after the novelty wears off.

I give the album a Like, Thumbs Up, 5 stars – whatever it is we are rating things with nowadays on DDF.

Re: Shutterfly Master Thread Gosh the new site update is retarded >:(. Just saw it for the first time today and it's impossible to do anything.

The biggest problem I ran into is that the new uploader will randomly decide that certain pictures are "duplicate" and will refuse to upload them. Not only that, but there is no way of "updating" a folder; to add missing pictures you need to comb through your own folder and manually compare it to Shutterfly's to find the missing files.

The internet is packed with people complaining, but for now there seems to be a backdoor fix. If you have any upload issues (I'm currently having the duplicate and "file size is too large" errors), create a share site and upload your pictures to that. The share site uploader will actually upload all your files like a normal human being, and you can than use these pictures on the regular site as usual.

ETA: Added to the wiki.

Re: Restricted areas of DDF
Lets hear the story.
Eta:
A written version of the story has been brought to my attention via the ddfra.

Reb Yonasan Eybeschutz (1690 - 1764) once took a walk with the priest in the city park. In their conversation, the priest asked, “Does it not say in your Torah "אחרי רבים להטות", that you should follow the majority? Since the Christians are the majority, why do you not follow us?”

Reb Yonasan says to him, “Please look toward the heavens and count the angels.”

"Are you out of your mind?" said the priest. "There are no angels.”

"I know,” said Reb Yonasan, "but work with me please. Look up and count the  angels.”

So the Rabbi and the priest stood there and gazed up at the sky ...

Seeing them looking up, a crowd slowly gathered around, and when they heard that the rabbi and the priest saw angels, they also began to "see" them. One sees six, the other sees eight, one fellow sees dancing angles, another sees sleeping angels.

After a few minutes, with a sizable crowd attracted and counting angels, Reb Yonasan took the priest aside and said to him:

"Between you and me, how many angels are there really?"

"Zero, of course", replied the priest.

"How can you possibly say that with certainty when such an impressive crowd is convinced they see the angels...Don't you follow the majority?"

Realizing the point, the priest replied, “But you Jews also follow blindly, you follow the Rabbis regardless!”

Reb Yonasan invited him to attend his shul services that Shabbos.

When the time came for the Haftara, Reb Yonasan announced that this week they were going to lain a completely different random Haftara. This ignited a huge uproar in Shul.

"Am I not the Rov?" he asked the mispallelim.

But the commotion only grew.

Reb Yonasan motioned to the priest as if to say, "I rest my case" and continued with the regular Haftara.

Re: Wifi Extender for Optimum Wifi? For all those that want to do this, you don't need a router/ repeater etc. I just set up my obi200 on optimum WiFi with just an obi200 + obiwifi. See below for instructions.

Go to a location where you can connect your obi via cable to the router and via WiFi.
Set up the obi and connect via both the router and wifi.
You need to obtain the OBIWiFi MAC address, (not the obi200 Mac id) Here are the steps where it can be found:
***NOTE*** Be sure to have the Ethernet connection connected to your Router as well as the OBIWIFI USB device connected to the OBI USB Port prior to continuing. ***NOTE***

After running the normal setup *firmware update check (***6) etc..

At OBITALK.COM Sign in with your credentials - If you do not have a registered device - reg it on their site. Once in the OBITAlk.com site located the section "My OBi Endpoints" and select the device that you are configuring. Scroll down on the bottom of the page and locate "OBi Expert Configuration" - You will be prompted to continue and blah blah blah changes may cause device to not function if you do not know what your are doing... agree....

Continue and locate "Enter OBi Expert" button. Finally On the left side panel "Status" is among other sections of configurations Click on "System Status"; the right panel will display either:
1.) "Device is not online" See ***NOTE** above
or
2.) A display of the system configuration showing device information including the OBIWIFI MAC address.

After obtaining the OBIWIFI MAC address and configuring your filters on your router; you no longer need the Ethernet connection connected. Place your OBI Device anywhere in your house and enjoy. Don't forget to Enabling USB WIFI (*27) on device and configure it to connect to your home/office network.

Now you can go back home.
Go to optimum.com and add a device.
Put in the obiwifi mac ID where it says Mac ID, click other laptop.
Press *27 on the phone.
Follow the regular instructions to add a WiFi to the obiwifi.
Choose optimum WiFi.
No password.
Enjoy!!

Re: Master Thread of Pet Peeves
People eating while on the phone. This is a very real 'pet peeve'. Not list of things that annoy me.
It's one thing if I call you and you happen to be mid bite. It's quite another if you're eating lunch and think now is a good time to call Stbaum. I have news for you. I will hang up the phone. I've done it to customers. To my (old) boss, and to one other person I don't want to say. I feel it's the most disgusting thing you can hear over the phone. I literally lose control.
It happened again today during a conference call and my (new) boss was sitting right there and I couldn't hang up. I couldn't say anything. All I could do was take deep breaths and hope nothing important was being said because all I could hear was chewing.

Am I alone here?
Your husband??  :o

The UPS driver in crown heights made a shiduch.
Our previous UPS driver was an Arab (originally from Jerusalem) named Mohammad. He was super friendly and knew everyone on his route, we even used to give him some home made Challah if he had a delivery for us on a Friday. When he was replaced with our current driver, Henry, I thought we'd never get the great service we got from Mohammad, but while Henry doesn't have the personality of Mohammad, there's no doubt in my mind that UPS has a company culture and training to be friendly and helpful, something that cannot be said about FedEx.
