Bump.
Your question is worded pretty unclear, however if I understand correctly the answer is no your IMEI won't be eligible.

What are the main practical differences between a budget phone and a flagship phone?

Other than cost, obviously. And not regarding technical (processor, etc.) differences, but practical differences for the user.

Camera, NFC (used for mobile wallets), possibly battery life, speed of updates.

side question

what is the best phone to have for family use- i.e. my son can take it with him to call us to pick him up-
something that has minutes that dent expire after a month and doesn't need to be reactivated every month

Are you looking for a phone or a plan?
If your looking for a plan look into Tello, freedom pop or someone mentioned in a diff thread beast mobile

But of course it's even easier with the G6 that doesn't have them...

I got a Moto G6 now and it seems to be a very good budget phone.
Indeed.
At the time I bought my g5 it wasn't worth the extra $40 that a simple app from the play store takes care of..
Besides chatting with Amazon for 5 minutes with a random excuse will probably get them to take away the special offers for free.. (that's what I did anyway)

Moto G6
I had the g4 with amazon offers and I feel like it fought with the filter and messed it up. Friends have the g6 without offers and it works great.
The offers can easily be taken care of.. about 30 seconds of googling will give you a few options..

Did we ever reach a consensus regarding their electronics, if they're safe? 19.99 for a pump pot (when yours just broke) is hard to turn down..

So now we have a use for all the phones from the Google Fi deal? :)
Except the last day for the promotion is April 4th, and unless your phone came really quickly and activated it immediately, April 4th is shy of 120 days by a few days for most people.
And as noted in the Google fi thread you can't have Google fi and Sprint service on phone together.

They claim to me that they canít activate a phone on both networks at once since the IMEI ID cannot be registered with Fi and Sprint at same time. Only way around is to switch Fi plan to another phone every time you want to switch to sprint plan. Or at least thatís what I was told.
This is in regards to the Sprint promo but relevant regardless

C/p from SD

4: My phone is/was on Project Fi (Google). What can i do to make it work on this promo?

AFTER removing your phone from Fi (port out or cancel), you have to call them and ask them to deregister the phone or rather make it available for Sprint postpaid use. Because Sprint is part of the Fi network it looks like the phone is already active on there. Takes 24-48 hours to happen once you open a ticket by calling 1-844-TALK-2FI.
Note: When I called, the CSR did not understand when I asked about "deregistering" my phone. Probably the most efficient way to go about this is to explain that you are trying to switch to Sprint and need to be removed from the Project fi list or whatever. My case had to be elevated to a higher up CSR/tech, and after a brief hold, I was told it was taken care of. I was then able to pass go on the sprint IMEI checker.

can this be done now for a 3rd time?
According to SD as long as the social wasn't a customer of Sprint in the last 45 days your good to go
