There's only 1 active Shul - Comunidad Israelita de Barcelona and it barely had a Minyan during the week. I'd first check that they have a Minyan on Shabbos before planning my stay around it.

Up In The Air / Avoiding Airfare Cancellation Fees
« on: May 17, 2019, 06:09:57 AM »
When canceling airline trip booked through Chase Sapphire Rewards is there any way to avoid the $150 per person, each way, cancellation fee? Canceling to attend a wedding, adjusting vacation schedule, no medical excuse.

Anyone have any ideas for a quick 6.5 hour stop over in Madrid?
The Prado museum is amazing if you appreciate art. Itís about a half hour walk from the Palace to the Prado through the heart of the City, passing famous square where auto de fe were held.

For now this is the plan. Makes sense?

Arrival 6:00 am
Take airport express to Kowloon
Try and make 7:15 Shachris
Daven eat breakfast at Mul Hayam
Leave luggage at hotel in Kowloon
Head to HKI (ferry)
Victoria Peak, cable car, downtown
Lunch at seven zero
Return to Kowloon
Ave of Stars, various hotel lobbies
Mincha/marriv
Dinner at Mul Hayam
Light show
Ladies/night markets
Hotel

What am I missing?
Check online whether Ave of Stars is still open as they were closed for construction.

Up In The Air / Strategies for Bidding on Upgrades
« on: January 07, 2019, 08:10:45 AM »
Booked Cathay Pacific V Class Economy JFK to YVR using CSR points. Cathay Pacific rules prohibit upgrading from V Class with money or miles, but permit me to bid on upgrade to Premium Economy.

Are there any good strategies for bidding?

not directly. Indirectly probably through Marriott but I wouldnít do that.
Why not?

Is it possible to convert Chase Sapphire Rewards points to Asia Miles directly or indirectly? If so, please explain how this can be done.

TR to come.... but that's what I did - moved from Westin Bayshore to Holiday Inn, ate both meals by Chabad. It was fine food, but not so much of it. Self-serve from buffet - not a waiter/restaurant sort of meal. You find seats at a random table with people, etc. as can be expected by a Chabad.
Thanks! They seem to call it the Kolel, but I asssume itís also Chabad or similar? A few follow up questions, please: Is davening also at the same location? Place to light candles? Was Holiday Inn Shabbos friendly, such as helping you get into your room? Do you use Hilton points for Holiday Inn and Marriot or SPG for the Westin Bayshore?

Just realized you were asking about the free meals not buying food from Maple Grill. Never mind my response.
I definitely want and plan to pay, whether directly or via a donation. was just looking for a nice Shabbos meal experience for my wife and I, rather than take-out in the hotel room. Thanks all for your responses. I will skim the many pages on this thread for more, but thus far the Kolel seems best choice for us. It seems that Holiday Inn would be nicest hotel within the eruv, and will probably move  from a better downtown Hotel for Shabbos.

It depends on your preference do you want a full ready meal for a set price or would you rather pick your items?
The main thing is that we would prefer not to eat the Friday night Shabbos Seuda alone in our hotel room, nicer to be served in a dining room setting. Also candle lighting in Hotel room might also be an issue.

I see that the Kollel offers free Shabbos meals. Any reviews or comments?
