Destination Guides And Trip Planning / Re: Hong Kong Master Thread
« on: May 30, 2018, 05:51:44 AM »
I want to go to Hong Kong for about 5 days in August including one Shabbos. I have a 7 month old baby who will be about 10 months old then. I really, really don't want to rely on using a Goy to get from the hotel to the Shul/meals.

Does anyone know of a hotel that is connected to one of the shuls/restaurants?
It seems like the Chabad in Kowloon is in the same center as a couple of hotels. Do they have access to the Chabad? is there a fence around the place?

Thanks!
I was not in the Chabad, but we went to KZ (Shul, restaurant, excellent Shabbos meals) which is in a shopping mall building literally next door to the Shangrila Hotel. However, to my knowledge there is no internal connection so you have to work outside on the public sidewalk (more than 4 Amos). And Iím not sure if you can carry in the mall itself until you get into KZ via escalator on 2nd floor. Perhaps if you call the KZ Rabbi (a Talmud Chacham and very nice fellow) he may have a solution, or goyta reference.

Am I Halachically prohibited from attending my second cousinís Shabbos Bat Mitzva in a Conservative Shul where she will be be called up for an Aliya and lain the Parsha? I would actually daven else where but only attend to avoid insulting or hurting their feelings. Please cite sources if possible.

They made an official announcement today at the hotel that there was a change in ownership
Why are there no reports in the media?

Any issues with yarmulke and tzitzis in Barcelona? I see @Yaalili mentioned no issues.
You should not have a problem. Itís the same as Manhattan or Miami. Some people may be antisemitic but most are tolerant and hardly take notice. And only  the Jews and Israeli tourists will have any idea what the tzittis are, or even care less.

Same way you'd avoid it in NYC or any other major city. Be conscious of your surroundings, and try to keep valuables in places that can't be easily picked.
+ 1
For example, when traveling, I like to wear a jacket with an inside zippered pocket for my wallet (and passports when not in the hotel safe).
Back home, on the NYC subways or crowded streets, I have always just kept my wallet in my regular front pocket, staying aware, but without much concern. If I was a tourist, I would probably be more careful to heed travel guide warnings. After my recent visit to Spain, I felt that those warnings were way overdone, although it probably depends where and when you go.

If All the Seas Were Ink: A Memoir, by Ilana Kurshan.
If you have done the Daf Yomi cycle (I'm on my 4th), and are in the mood for an unconventional, albeit earnest, approach, to be taken with a grain of salt, you will enjoy this.

There seem to be 2 Chabads in Milan with Shabbos hospitality: one with Rav Michael Elmaleh at Naar Israel piazza castello 5 and another with Rav Tzemach, Bet Hatalmud, via luigi soderini 35 with meals at via Francesco Carlini 5. Please post if you have any idea about either or both of these.

If I have one morning in Miami (2 adults), is there anything that's a must see?
Vizcaya is nice, google it and see if you find it appealing. Consider a walk or drive on Ocean Drive (or rent bicycles), or visit the iconic Fountainbleu Hotel.
