COVID-19 Discussion Board / Re: Czar Cuomo

For all the hate that man gets around here, listening to him would have saved tens, if not hundreds, of lives.
Unfortunately a lot of it is well founded. But that doesn’t mean that his initial warnings were wrong and they definitely could’ve saved lives if they were heeded.

He may not have that much sway over the minute details of the decisions we make, but him downplaying the severity led to an overall lack of urgency about the virus throughout the entire city. If no one is taking it seriously, it definitely plays a part in us not shutting down on Purim.
The only person that we heard from that was screaming to shut down Purim was Dr. Stuart Ditchek.

Not working with the community to circumvent the laws everyone else needs to follow is egregious behavior?
He made a promise to them if they complied with the rules he wouldn’t make harsher ones. They complied and he still shut the shuls. I don’t understand why he expects them to follow the rules this time.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out. Even Satmar's political connections may not be enough to save their chassuna, which isn't in a red zone, but still had too large an expected turnout. How nice of the state to serve the cancelation order on Friday night.

https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2020/10/17/williamsburg-wedding-of-10-000-attendees-ordered-canceled-by-cuomo
I’m not defending the wedding at all, but will just point something out. Cuomo promised both satmar rebbas that if they toned down their SImchas beis hashoevas this year then he won’t close shuls. Satmar followed through but the governor still closed the shuls, now there’s zero chance they don’t hold the wedding exactly the way want too.

If he would actually work with the community then he would see more willingness to follow some of the rules.

Explain how it’s a straw man? Have you forgotten that kids were allowed into school and did so, until complete recklessness (such as 400+ person weddings) caused it to get out of hand? When people post how this is the equivalent of leaving Spain, and we need to be moser nefesh, make no mistake: they’re making the argument that we should leave because we can’t make the 400 person weddings, not because of schools.

To answer your question (which I shouldn’t need to, because if it’s unsafe now it’s not a valid cheshbon that “we may never be able to”, that doesn’t change the current metzius, it’s not up to us to play G-d only do do the hishtadlus we are expected to), let’s say never. Does that change the argument?
So you think it’s unsafe for kids to be in school currently? Nothing to do with the government?

But if parents feel it is safe then sending kids to school in a basement shouldn’t be a problem?

How about let children attend in-person school and make small weddings? Or is it worth sacrificing everything to be able to have 400 guests including people from out of state at every wedding?
Straw man argument if I ever saw one. I’m talking about kids in school and you’re telling me that we shouldn’t have 400 person weddings, you’ll have zero argument from me about that one. But once we are here, when would you think it’s safe to have a 400 person wedding?

I have yet to see any evidence of a possible system that can weed out duplicates.
The system in these states record the positives with all of your info. So when they log your info and see that you had a previous positive then they won’t count this as a new positive.

There's no way they're going to relinquish this control, they'll find a new excuse.
Exactly. So I’m curious when Lurker thinks this well end and for how long people should be willing to watch kids waste away on zoom.

My personal opinion is that this isn't a situation where what we believe in is being challenged, just how we've gotten used to doing it. And even that is temporary due to circumstances beyond any human control.
A temporary thing that has no end in sight. Just this week Cuomo said that we will need to keep the status quo for at least a year after a vaccine is available.

Good. I was shocked how no one sued again after his response to rabbi bender was revealed.
