Credit Cards / Re: Foreign Transaction Fee
« on: June 12, 2008, 01:28:33 PM »
I believe AMEX charges 2%.
Considering that changing cash also costs at least 2% it is a no-brainer for me to use my Starwood card as much as possible when overseas.
i wouldnt call it a no brainer   with your amex youre guaranteed to always pay 2% over the current rate however with changing money theres a good chance especially whats been going on in israel that a few days after you change, the rate will drop and youre going to get a heck of a lot better than what amex would give you at that time (for all you laymen - if when you come to israel the rates 3.4 so if you change money or if you use amex you will lose 2% with amex itll be the purchase price + 2% and with changing money youll get lets say 3.39  now a few days later the rate drops to 3.3 so with amex youre still paying the current rate PLUS 2% whereas if you originally changed your money you would be alot better  and this is been happening a lot recently)

"Mostly will call to and receive calls from cell phones and landlines in Israel.  Very little to the US"

true but it sounds like people with EXISTING cell phones not tourists like himself and most phones in israel dont have a wakie talkie feature  so its not worth paying more for a feature hes probably not going to be using too much

On The Road / Re: Diners Club=Free Primary CDW

Any other diners club cardholders out there?

It's got quite a good amount of features, but the best is the free primary cdw, which I haven't seen on any other card.

It also has a decent mileage transfer reward program, and it gets you into a decent amount of international lounges (domestically it only gets you into EWR and MIA lounges)

Annual fee is $95, but is waived if you have a CitiGold checking account...
do you by any chance know if it works in israel as well, like the world mastercard?

When are you loooking to go? which cities? and who do you miles with?
im actually in israel and would like to go after 9 av (aug 10) to (in  no particular order) rome venice florence pisa  and maybe the last shabbos (aug 30) in zurich
i have about 50k starwood (with the possibility to get or borrow more)
400 k Aadvantage miles
100 k membership rewards points

You're thinking of it that with the cash back you can get let's say $250 cash back on $25,000 worth of purchases, which you can then go ahead and get a cheap flight. But what about the other way around? I just paid 50,000 miles to fly EWR-Paris(CDG), CDG-Venice(VCE), Rome(FCO)-LHR, LHR-EWR. With cash back that would've been $500, but the tickets, had I paid for them, would price out at $3,000 or more.

So it depends how you want to look at it. I would say the miles are more worth it.
how were you able to get it for so little points? can you help me out? im also trying to go to italy this summer
