Just Shmooze / Re: Can someone help me with a gemara?
« on: August 16, 2018, 10:27:01 PM »
I was asking something based on an assumption. I wanted to know what the comparison of the gemaras case is to the case of forgetting yaaleh vyavo.

I thought that when you forget yaaleh vyavo the original tefillah was good and you just need to add yaaleh vyavo which happens to need another tefillah in order to be said.

So over there you won't be adding anything if you're mashlim after Rosh chodesh since you're tefillah on Rosh chodesh worked for whatever you said, just without yaaleh vyavo.

Or in other words I thought the tefillah on Rosh chodesh doesn't turn into a nedava. But the tashlumin afterwards does turn into a nedava (except for yaaleh vyavo).

On the other hand by the case of forgetting shabbos mincha, the first maariv turns into a nedava. Therefore the third maariv is now really the tefillah for shabbos. So it's considered you ARE saying something you haven't said before.

If that's so, then it's possible that R' Alfes would hold you have to daven a third time but by Rosh chodesh you would not have to daven over.

If I'm making a mistake please let me know.

I see you're using past tense, so I'm not sure where you are now with your assumption, but I believe it is incorrect. After establishing that there is such a thing as tashlumim when you miss or mess up a tefillah (which for most of our intents and purposes, are the same), Tosfos raises the interesting issue of when you mess up, but the next SE which you will use as tashlumim LACKS the very thing you messed up with. So, for example, is it worth saying two marivs on the 2nd of the month when you anyway won't be saying ya'aleh v'yavo, just to make up for an IDENTICAL SE that you just said, without ya'aleh v'yavo (albeit on rosh chodesh when you should have). This is similar to missing Shabbos mincha which you cannot "replace" on sat nite, but maybe you can say two weekday ones anyway. This question is debated in Tosfos with R Alfas on one side. Is that better or am I still missing it?

Yes - but there is a toll on the road leaving the airport towards Miami as soon as you leave the airport. Just be careful. Am sure there is a way to take local streets to try and go around, but that toll charge will trigger a fee on most car rental companies.

Corect, but you can program Waze to get around it. We did not have Waze, but we had my aunt who coached us onto I believe I195 to get to 95? through Miami Beach to Bal Harbour, no toll. Kind of annoying, but only for one ride.

That's what he's saying. You're first becomes at best, a tefillas nedava, in retrospect. Your second one was done properly and conts as mariv, then the third counts as the makeup for mincha. When he says "marvi'ach," that doesn't include the benefits of a tefillas nedava; he means benefits of fulfilling a halachic requirement.
Not sure I understood your question correctly, but that's what I think.

That quite a big fix...the discussion is if you have the card now...is upgrading for 20k can postpone when you can apply for the new card and get the much bigger 100k.

Any DPs on this? Upgraded mine bc I'm well over 5/24, but can theoretically apply for wife from scratch so don't want to ruin that for 20K.

Not sure why I was watching, but I guess the answer is because of what happened.
Apparently, 8th time in my lifetime (33 yrs) someone hit a 2-out walkoff GS down 3. First time it was a PH.
Pretty wild.

I'd personally go with Ditmas by a drop. Not much of a difference in price and generally better food. BB's not bad though.

Is there a Plag Mincha Maariv in the Miami area?

Did you find one? Per the internet, it seems this place has one: Hechal Shalom Or Oziel Sephardic Congregation

Okay, probable change of plans. First day we're arriving late and going out with family. Prob no point in going to Harbour Grill at that point. Where would be place place to pick up/order in? Doesn't have to be as high class; more like hemish takeout/Chinese etc? I see a place called Chai Wok but it hasn't been discussed here at all. I'm taking that as a bad sign, correct? Is there a comparable type place (like Carlos and Gabbys or Chinese, but we have C&G up here).

Any suggestions for a breakfast/lunch place - biggest bang for your buck ?

Yoffee Coffee is pretty good and may be a few bucks cheaper than places like Purple Pear or Hava Java. The regular bagel stores (Bubbas/Bagel DLox) are fine too.

Popper are key. Either a large poppers and unbelieveable onion or a JR combo platter plus a small order of poppers

Oleta river state park is a great place to rent kayaks or canoes. You can catch a glimpse of some wildlife over there. We saw manatees and a couple of dolphins swam around our kayaks for a bit.

Thanks! Looking forward! Any food snorkeling recs? Could be a boat trip with snorkleing in the middle or if anyone's just rented snorkels off the beach, that might be even better (DW's afraid of nausia from the boat ride).

Spend. Prepay bills.

I was going to Like the response after the first sentence but the second sentence ruined it.

It's very rarely available, you can ask when you are ready to go, but don't count on it.

Hope you have a great time! If you have more questions feel free to ask.

While here you can also checkout the roof of the grand beach hotel, very nice view and lounge to sit and talk in the evenings.

Thanks so much and thanks for all the recs! Maybe I'll see you around...

He's going next week.

I am very upset about 90K spg points, but you take childcare when you can get it, and I felt that since it's been 6 years, I wanted it to be as overtop as possible (also burning many miles on our first ever first/business class experience, even though value on 2.5 hour trip is not amazing, I'm going #AllIn).

Thank you all for the recommendations so far. It sounds like we will only need car transportation once (Fuego) the whole week and then maybe short rides to activities, so it seems like Lyft is the way to go. I am going to look in Oleta and Haulover for kayaking, biking, etc, is that's all we're looking to do, so thank you much for that.

I see that the St. Regis advertises some sort of complimentary car service for a <5 mile radius. Anyone have any experience using that?
