Price Guide Master Thread
This thread should serve as a guide to help people know what a good deal is. Not all DDMS Deals set the bar for what the price is for that item, as some of them might be so low that a higher price later is still worth mentioning. Also note not all products are identical while Dial Soap might be acceptable at less than .33 a bar, Dove Soap may fetch double the price and be considered a great deal at .57 a bar. Feel free to update the wiki to add more brands in as well. Also note that each unit may have different qty like toilet paper more squares or toothpaste more oz. I hope this will help serve as a guide. Feel free to update the Wiki make sure to add a URL to a matching page on DDMS. HT MYI December 01, 2016, 02:26:20 PM |

Re: Viva La Revolución! Time-traveling to Cuba with Something Fishy, whYME, and CITH
Some important notes: - As with the last segment, this one is split it into two parts, with the second half coming tomorrow. - Due to the amount of pictures, let your browser fully load before you begin. - All the pictures are by me, except where indicated otherwise. [Something Fishy] After a good night's sleep, we were out and about before sunrise to watch Havana wake up. We headed down Paseo de Marti, the main boulevard that runs from the Capitol and the National Theater to the ocean, and is bisected by a pedestrian walkway: ![]() ![]() ![]() Turning into a side street, we came across a commentary on the revolution graffitied on a wall: ![]() The sky beginning to brighten: ![]() Early to rise: ![]() ![]() Photo by whYME: ![]() Setting up shop, under the ever-watchful eye of Fidel: ![]() ![]() ![]() Photo by whYME: ![]() In Cuba, does Dora teach kids English? ![]() After a some side-street wanderings, we wanted to head to the Malecon to watch sunrise, but we had gotten disoriented. We were back on Paseo de Marti, but we couldn't figure out if we needed to turn right or left (even though the ocean was very near, the boulevard curved on both ends so we couldn't see very far). A pair of security guards were nearby, so we stepped over to them. Me, pointing first in one direction, then in the other: "Malecon?" Guard 1, completely clueless: "Malecon??" Me: "Malecon!" Guard 2, looking around hopelessly: "Malecon?" Me: "Si, Malecon!" Again, only stares. It's as if these two had never heard of the most famous place in their town, and which is literally three streets away from them. CITH finally takes out his phone and writes it down for them. Guard 1: "AH! MaleCON, not MALecon!! Malecon, there!" Imagine you stop a cop in the middle of Seventh Avenue and ask him which way to Teems Square, but he has no clue what you mean because you didn't say Times Square. Yes, that's the level of genius displayed by these two nincompoops. Five minutes later, we were at the Morro Castle in the pre-dawn light: ![]() First light over Vedado: ![]() And on Old Havana: ![]() Photo by whYME: ![]() The tide was low, so we watched both human and animal getting breakfast. My pants were still slipping and sliding after last night's wardrobe malfunction on the Malecon, and it was driving me crazy. It wasn't long and we found a couple of stalls selling trinkets to tourists, and lo, one had some belts. It was definitely used and had seen better days, but it fit me and had a working buckle. What more can one ask for? [whYME] One thing that was very different here than other tourist trinket markets I've been to, it seems the things here were actually locally made, not just the same junk imported from China. In all the other trips, with the primary focus being landscapes, we pretty much came back with pictures of the same things. Other than differences in composition and such, things were pretty similar. Here in Cuba was another story altogether, as there were many many times when we standing right next to each other but got completely different pictures of completely different subjects. Photo by whYME: ![]() Photo by whYME: ![]() After that it was off to a shop to stock up on more water, and back to the apartment for shachris and breakfast. Duly fed and watered, we went back outside on a quest: find a taxi to take us to Vinales. As I've mentioned in the introduction, we were hoping to take a day trip to the beautiful Vinales Valley, around two hours from Havana. The plan was - hopefully - to arrive in the area a few hours before sunrise, shoot some astrophotography, sunrise, and early morning activity before heading back to Havana. So the search was on for a driver who knew the way, was familiar with the valley, had an air-conditioned car (preferably a classic, of course), and was crazy enough to pick us up at 1 in the morning, all for a decent price. Shouldn't be too hard, eh? We noticed a lovely-looking 1953 Dodge and hung around to take some pictures of it: ![]() [Cat In The Hat] One of SF's many, yet unadvertised, talents is tripping over his own feet ![]() ![]() As we were shooting, the car's owner walked over to shmooze and find out if we were looking for a taxi. Well whaddya know, we actually are: "Si! To Vinales!" Yes, of course, he knows Vinales. Let's go now! In our terrible mixture of English and broken Spanish, we tried to impress on him that while we did want to go to Vinales, we want to leave at 1 AM, and we need to discuss a price first. After a lot of back and forth negotiations (which included getting into the car to test the air conditioning [whYME] And that air condtioner was working great, it was like stepping into a freezer.), [Something Fishy] we had a deal: for 120 CUC, he'll pick us up at the apartment at 1 AM, drive and guide us in Vinales, and have us back home at 1 PM. Or at least we thought that's what we arranged. We had no idea if we were all on the same page, and it wasn't helped by the fact that he clearly couldn't fathom why we'd want to go in the middle of the night. So there we were, all standing around awkwardly, neither side being quite sure if they understood the other, when suddenly... "?וואס טוט א איד און קובה" What??? This was last thing we expected to hear in Cuba, and with a flawless, hiemisha accent no less. We wheeled around to see an elderly Cuban, wearing a black yarmulka and a huge smile on his face. "!נא? שלום עליכם" It was like an angel had been sent from Heaven. Five seconds worth of translating from Yiddish to Spanish and the arrangements with the driver were concluded, and we sent him away to go take a long nap while we stayed to schmooze with our new friend, Lazer Shklar. ![]() (I warned you about that hat ![]() He was born in Poland, where the Nazis murdered his entire family in the Holocaust. He came to Cuba as a refugee right after the war, all alone in the world, and had stayed on for the last 75 years. He would like to come to New York, but doesn't think it'll ever happen. He did ask for my address and phone number, just in case... He was as religious as possible under the circumstances, and was very upset about the state of the local Jewish community, which far from being religious, is mostly not even Jewish at all due to intermarriage. He took out his wallet and showed us a picture of the Lubavitcher Rebbe that he carries everywhere, and which he says reminds him that he'll see his family once again when Moshiach comes. On that sad note he bid us goodbye, shook hands once more, and slowly walked off. ![]() May 02, 2017, 10:58:49 AM |

Re: Jewish Music (New CDs, hock, and opinions)
First of all, as usual, unbelievable review. Thanks! Why don't you mention the song "father"? IMO it's the best song on the album. MBD's voice is so clear and fresh. The lyrics are brilliant (I don't understand how Lipa can sometimes be so brilliant, and sometimes so foolish?).It is a good song, with a very pretty melody. But it is quite personal, and didn't really do much for me. I'm not exactly walking around humming a song about David Werdiger. I dunno, I just didn't really know what to do with it, so I left it out. Lipa is a master lyricist, and fantastically creative musically too. IMHO, he loses his brilliance when he tries too hard to be what he is not. Lipa the badchan is fantastic, Lipa the Hassidic Lady Gaga is cringetastic. June 27, 2017, 03:55:08 PM |

Re: Journey to the End of the Earth: A DDF Arctic Adventure
Planning and Preparing I'm not going to go over the entire saga of the months leading up to this trip, as Dan's already done a pretty good job of covering it on the main site. Suffice it to say that planning a trip like this was not exactly easy. It involved way too many late nights on Whatsapp experimenting with countless flight options, itinerary variations, even different country options. Mix in a host of Airbnb options and various tour outfitters and it was a planning nightmare. It was normal for Chaim'l or moish to wake up in their respective countries to hundreds of unread messages. Poor guys. With everything booked - at long last - the whole itinerary turned on its head, naturally. Flights to Svalbard had opened, and so a flurry of cancellations and rebooking followed. It took a while, but eventually everyone had their flights, a food plan was prepared, and lodging, cars, and excursions were booked. Managing all these flights was migraine-inducing; no other way to put it. We were five people, coming from five different cities across three continents. Between us we had a total of 58 flights spread out over 27 PNRs, involving 14 airports in 8 countries on 7 different dates - and that's not counting the countless booked-and-then-cancelled flights. This is what my TripIt looked like at one point. Totally bonkers: ![]() Here's the final flight map, with my own flights highlighted in red: This was, once more, primarily a photography-oriented trip. Considering the varied subject matter and the extreme environment we were heading to, you could well imagine the mountain of camera gear each of us carried. My lineup: ![]() ![]()
Clothing-wise, I used the gear I got before my first Iceland trip, which were perfectly suited for this trip as well. We would need special suits for snowmobiling and dog sledding, but these would be provided through the respective outfitters. Food was way more challenging. We were to be gone for 9 days - including Shabbos - with absolutely zero kosher food to be had. We needed to bring literally everything with us. In the end each of us was in charge of a different "department", which had the added benefit of arriving on different flights from different countries and so possibly avoiding some customs issues. We had Pom meals from Dan which was left over from his Island Hopper trip with AJK and was only a little freezer burned. Chaim'l brought a pile of Hermolis meals from London, which was thoroughly delicious. whYME procured a massive hunk of ribs and brisket from Izzys. I brought 6 pounds of rugelach and 4 challahs from Shloimy's and a load of cold cuts. And Moish brought a metric ton of cod liver. In addition to all that we had countless snacks, Tradition soups, wraps and breads, tuna, condiments, and whatnot. For Shabbos we went all out with wines, dips, gefilta fish, chicken soup, cholent, kokosh cakes, you name it. Just some of the food we brought, with the Arctic Ocean right outside our window: ![]() ![]() The block of ribs from Izzy's, all dressed for travel: ![]() It was finally time to go. Re: Prison
Initially I vacillated between the feeling that white collar crime didn’t deserve harsh sentencing, and the thought that perhaps if I had lost my life savings and my life had been changed forever as a victim, I would feel differently. The more I read, the more I am convinced that no one deserves to be treated in such a cruel, inhuman way, with such disregard of basic human dignity. It is little wonder that the rate of recidivism is so high when the inmates are conditioned to a constant existence in survival mode. I would guess that most of those who go through the system are not literate or articulate enough to describe their experience. If there were greater awareness there would doubtless be more advocacy in the frum world for our brethren who are suffering, as well as political pressure on the powers that be to change the system. You seem to be a talented, compelling, and descriptive writer. If you were able to convey your experience beyond this forum (book form?), it would probably have an impact. It is admirable that you worked have worked so hard and continue to work hard to turn your life around to such a degree. I think you deserve a lot of credit for what you have managed to do. Hopefully your story can inspire many others who still have a long road ahead of them. December 05, 2017, 11:04:25 AM |

Re: Prison
I would hope that everyone would answer that in the negativebor at least endeavors to answer is in that fashion. My bracha is you should never be tested.I will insert the relevant Geschichte here: R. Chaim Halberstam of Sanz, known as the Divrei Chaim, once stood at his window and called to a passerby. "What would you do," he asked, "if you found a purse with a large sum of money, and the name of its owner was in it?" "What kind of question is that?" the man responded. "I would immediately return it." "You speak foolishly," the Tzaddik said. He then called in another man and repeated the question, to which this man replied, "A large sum of money? Why, I would keep it." "You are a scoundrel," the Tzaddik said. The next person to whom the question was put said, "Rabbi, how can I tell you now what I would do under those circumstances? I might say one thing now and act otherwise under temptation. Right now I can only hope that if I am put to the test, G-d will help me overcome temptation." "Indeed you are truly wise and your words are spoken with intelligence and knowledge!" said the Tzaddik. December 06, 2017, 04:16:58 PM |

The person (R' Sholom Ber Sorotzkin, although if you didn't know that then you shouldn't be commenting on this video) answered 90% shelo lishmah, 10% lishmah. Re: How many non-Jewish people use this forum?
Do you guys find the jewish-centric stuff annoying? The topic is How Many Non-Jewish People Use This Forum. But then you ask if people find the Jewish-Centric stuff annoying. It's pretty obvious to the most casual of observer that this is a Jewish-Centric site on the whole. As a non-Jew, I understand that and it is what it is. I definitely don't find it annoying because again, it is what it is and if it was annoying i'd just never come back. In my opinion, I would say it is more about irrelevance. What airlines have the best kosher food, what airlines will reheat my kosher meals, where to find the best Chabad in Zimbabwe, what hotels in the Democratic Republic of Congo have regular keys for Shabbos. That stuff is irrelevant to me, so it makes the trip reports and such less helpful/useful. But definitely not annoying. That would be petty on my or anyone elses part.
