Up In The Air / Getting US Airways lounge access
« on: November 03, 2013, 06:36:36 AM »
I'm flying to Israel in a few weeks with US Airways (via the Dans Deal posted a few months ago), and I have a long layover in Philadelphia on the way back to Canada.

How can I get lounge access in Philadelphia?

Destination Guides And Trip Planning / Kashrus / Kosher in Israel
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:45:20 PM »
Keeping Kosher in Israel, ironic as it is, seems very complicated. There are all sorts of hechsherim to be aware of and everyone has the one's that they hold of and some they curse out.

Are there any experts on the Forums who can help break down this complex topic?

The main questions on my mind are:
  • What is Badatz?
  • What is Rabanut?
  • What does Badatz do that Rabanut doesn't and vice versa?
  • Are badatz and Rabanut the same throughout Israel? Are there people who won't eat Rabanut in one city but eat in another? Or in time that Badatz isn't available?

Up In The Air / Luggage on Elal
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:41:39 PM »
Are the people at Elal real sticklers about not going over 50 pounds of luggage?

If my suitcase is 52 pounds, will they let it slide?

Up In The Air / Garment Bag as Carry On
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:30:08 AM »
Does anyone have any experience taking a garment bag onto a flight, particularly an Elal flight?

On an Air France flight from Montreal to London, my wife was able to take a garment bag in addition to her small suitcase. The stewardess hung it up in a closet near the cabin.
I'm wondering if Elal would do similar. Any experience?

Just Shmooze / Finding uncashed wedding present cheques
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:03:59 AM »
I recently found 2 cheques my wife and I received as wedding presents from friends of our parents, but never cashed. Their combined value is $375.

We got married two years ago.

Is it too late to mention to these friends that we never cashed their cheques and perhaps get replacements or do we just leave it and too bad on us?

General Discussion / Avoiding VAT in Israel
« on: August 27, 2013, 01:38:30 AM »
I am going to Israel for one year on a student visa (I already have my visa). My wife is on a work visa.
We plan to do a lot of touring in the first month we are there. However, when tourist services ask to see our passport stamp (in order to remove the VAT) we won't have anything to show them - resulting in probably hundreds of dollars extra in taxes.

Does anyone know how we can get out of the VAT despite our non-tourist status?

I'm thinking at the airport, I'll explain that we are entering as tourists, and plan to begin work and studying in a month, and hopefully get a tourist stamp. I have no idea if this will work.
Many of you must have gone to Yeshiva for a year on a student visa - did anyone manage to get tourist stamps for some period of time, or find some other way out of VAT?

General Discussion / Slogan for Dan's Deals
« on: August 18, 2013, 11:54:02 PM »
On the homepage, I noticed the cheesy cliche slogan "A treasure chest of Internet Deals"

I think we can do better. So I'm proposing a contest for the next official slogan / motto for the website.

I'll start with one:

"One man's ignorance is another man's awareness"

Up In The Air / How to get bumped to ElAl Business
« on: August 11, 2013, 10:27:04 PM »
My wife and I are flying from Toronto to Tel Aviv direct for Rosh Hashana with Elal Economy.

Does anyone know how I can possibly get bumped to Business for free? I've heard of it happening before but never got a good explanation of how.

Just Shmooze / Wedding Shtick Ideas
« on: July 29, 2013, 11:06:11 AM »
My sister is getting married soon and I want to come up with some kind of shtick to perform in front of her and her chosson at the dancing.

Does anyone have any good "wedding shtick" ideas?

(Some background details that may or may not be relevant: wedding is in Canada, I can juggle alright, I'm an ok dancer, athletic, willing to dress up in anything if necessary....)

Used or refurbs are good too! Good price is my priority (Hence why I'm on this forum).

Nice apartment in Miami beach (on the beach) available for only $130 a night.
It's available from this Thursday, February 21st,  for two weeks.
