Amex claims card was closed for months?
« on: March 22, 2015, 05:17:27 PM »
I tried using one of my amex's that I don't often use, and it got declined, so I just pulled out a different card and payed. Then I called in and cleared the account.

I then tried using the card again, and... denied again. So after spending 3+ hours on the phone with various departments, the conclusion was that this account has been declared a fraudulent account by Amex, and closed down months ago.

A couple of problems with this,

A. I was never notified they were/wanted to close the account (they claim they spoke to the "real cardholder" at that time, what???)

B. Every representative that I spoke to seemed to show the account in good standing and I just received a statement on this card

Now they say there is nothing I can do other than reapply for the account.

Has anyone ever dealt with something like this?

TIA

I don't understand-don't you have monthly statements? Shouldn't that show the account was open?

What does your CR say when was it closed
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

You would think, I have the statements, and the first 6 reps I spoke to all said the account was in good standing, after going through the notes on the account, the next few determined it was closed.

It says open, though no payment history has ever been reported for it.

Did you speak to a supervisor?

Do you have any idea at all why they may have decided your account is "fraudulent"?
As an aside, IME AMEX is impossible with these things. They just make decisions about your account and there's no talking to them.

Just curious, when you say no history has ever been reported, do you mean that you never left a balance on it or that you did but it somehow slipped through?

The first months balance (November/December) shows as the current balance, though it was paid off right after the statement closed.

What do you mean it "shows as current balance"? You mean it's reported as not paid?

I'm not familiar with Credit Karma (because I always go direct to the CBs) but it seems to be saying you never made a payment-is that true? Do you owe AMEX 926$? And if yes how do they reconcile that with the fact that the account was closed a long time ago? Do they still want you to pay the balance? And why isn't this balance reported as late? I'm confused about the whole thing.

Me too, the account was paid off after the month, though amex still hasn't reported to the bureau since then. In my amex account online the balance is zero and the account appears normal.

So strange but at least you do see something is up because under normal circumstances this wouldn't happen. You say you spoke to supervisors-which number did you call? The one on the back of the card?

Update: They claim since the flagged it as a fraudulent application, no one can reopen.

I want to reopen a card I just closed (to avoid the 4 card max with amex) will that be a hard pull?
