How sturdy are they if I want to put them in my work bag during the day. I don't want them to snap.  I'll be giving up some convenience by not being able to stuff them in my pocket...

They're flexible but still need to be treated with care. I keep them in the back compartment of my laptop bag, but try to limit what else goes into that compartment... They've survived about 10 business trips/vacations in the last 9 months or so. Hope this helps. FYI you can also keep them around your neck. They hide very well under a shirt and/or collar. It's easy to forget you're wearing them.
