Amex BC prefered yearly limit
« on: December 23, 2013, 11:33:55 AM »
Hi,

When dose the $6000 yearly limit for 6% at grocery resets - on jan 1 or at the end of the card membership year?
I opened my card 2 months ago and I found conflicting info online.
Thanks.

I'm almost 100% sure that it's based on calendar year...but how it's based on calendar year can be confusing.

Not positive myself, but from what I've read it appears to be the last statement that closes in 2013 will be the last statement before the reset.  Or said in the opposite way.  If your statement closes on 1/2/14 for purchases from 12/3/13->1/2/14, all those purchases will be up for the 2014 $6000 yearly limit.

That.

Really?  Hmmm, please do enlighten.

From what I had gathered, anyone on the 6K limit was reset every calendar year.  If you were grandfathered into the unlimited spending (applied by early Nov 2012), you would get reset at your membership year, and then have 6K spend til the end of 2013 (with the wonky accounting that I described previously about statement close dates) and then get a fresh 6K for 2014.

It would seem one of us is wrong. I'm almost 100% sure it is not me.  :)

I guess we will find out for sure in February or March (that one cycle delayed points posting really makes it difficult to hedge).

Yeah, but you had the unlimited card.

From what I've read, the unlimited card converts to 6K on your anniversary in 2013, and gives you a new 6K for the remainder of the calendar year.  Then your 6K restarts again on the first statement that closes in the new year.

So to prove whether I'm right or you're right, we'll have to wait until your statement closes in January, and then continue to wait until your points show up in February's statement.  Note, I'm not as positive about the exact statement that the reset happens (whether it's the first January statement close or the first statement that starts in January...I'm inclined to think it's the former, but if it's the latter, then we'd have to wait yet another month to find out for sure) or if it's a particular day during the statement period when the reset happens.

CV or anyone else (with a legacy card), has your Feb statement cut yet?  I know I'll find out for sure when my statement cuts at the end of the month, but I'm curious if what I read and wrote above is correct (two 6K periods within this past year...once starting with the anniversary statement and once for the january statement) so that I can be confident in my grocery spending now.

Have not used the card this year.

OK, I'll post an update at the end of the month when my statement cuts.

Confirmed...the 6K reset for my January statement.

So what I read was right...

If you were a legacy card holder (unlimited rewards), your unlimited became a new 6K on the statement that contained your anniversary.  Then, you'd get a new 6K starting on the statement that contains January 1st.

For me, that would mean I got unlimited 6% until the end of October 2013, then a new 6K from end of October through end of December and a new 6K from end of December 2013 to end of December 2014.

So have at it!
