Booking us thru ba on aa

Found a flight on aa from pHl to cle for 12.5k miles each way. I didn't realize it was a us flight. I called ba to book it as it wasn't available online. They told me I could book it for 9k miles. I didn't end up booking it for different reason. Does this make sense? I thought march 31 was earliest. Might have been a cad rep that's all.
