I have the same issue. It will get my kid tired but he won't sleep unless he is in familiar surroundings (in a crib or strapped in a stroller with zero visibility of parents) so he will just be extra cranky

+1

Definitely the same experience when it comes to sleeping. Definitely much less and more difficult when not in their natural habitat.

All true but it DOES get better, especially when the older ones can start to entertain your little ones!

When I tried that the kid fell asleep immediately, slept for 2 hours & was wide awake the rest of the flight (all night).

Melatonin is just the hormone to fall asleep (not a drug to knock you out) so that can happen but if you (or your kids) are already extra tired but can't fall asleep because of adrenaline, jetlag, stimuli (like in a crowded plane) then it has been a lifesaver to fall asleep and the exhaustion takes care of the rest.

When that day comes.

We where talking about it in the MLE thread but it's also great to take some of your points to bribe your parents to watch the grandkids so you can have your own epic trip sans bebe!  :P

Correct, the best advice is to be close to your parents and your in laws and have them watch the kids. Always. Lol.

Thank god my MIL is great and comes once a year for a week or so to watch while we go on vacation.

If I could walk the kid that's only half bad. When there was turbulence the entire flight & they didn't let, that was one massive disaster.

Another benefit of J or F is that you can make a little play area on the floor that's fully enclosed if you play the seats right.  Just don't look to closely at the floor

in the last 2 years i flew with kids at all of the above stages. this is my experience:

0-6 months: bottle + Pacifier=Sleep
6-12 months: bottle + Pacifier + lollipop= sleep and kept busy(more or less)
1-2 years: everything that is available mid flight+ people getting angry =nothing helped >:(
2-3 years: Laptop+ Barney+ nosh+ occasional walks=managed the flights and would not have a problem doing it again

i traveled twice with a 9-10 month old and it was a nightmare.
i recently traveled with a one  and two year old but only had seat for two year old, so i simply strapped the one year old into the older ones car seat and held the two year old. worked out way better that way.

Has anyone ever put some family members in Y and some in J or F and switched around during the flight so everyone can get some sleep?

I know someone that does that.  Seems odd to me,  they claim it's great
