Challenge - lowest price for an Eee PC!
« on: May 29, 2008, 11:10:38 AM »
I've become obsessed lately with the Asus sub-notebook concept, and started looking for one to buy for my wife (who also thinks they're cute).

The great thing about these is that they're so cheap to begin with ($300-$400 for the basic "surf" models), yet have overwhelmingly positive reviews. But after looking around a bit and finding various deals, its become sort of challenge to see just how cheap I can get an Eee PC.

Figured I'd throw this out there to you folks and see what you have to say.
Now, I asked this in the DansDeals discussion post, and got an answer from someone who called himself "e" (http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/3769#comment-38764). Although I appreciate that he responded, this is not the sort of answer I'm looking for. I know what they retail for, and I know what they sell for on ebay (and yes, you CAN get them cheaper on ebay, despite what you claim... I almost bought one BIN for $20 less than the retail, but I didn't want a green color one).

My question basically is, if you wanted an Eee PC for the least amount of money, what would you do (price matching, promo codes, etc)?

Oh, and its gotta be a non "surf" model, cuz the Mrs. wants to skype her family with the built in webcam (surf model = sans webcam & smaller battery).
Let me know what you think!

That is interesting...
but its not the challenge I have presented in the original post.

I'm aware of the alternatives- Since the Eee's success has hit the ears of marketing directors, all the major manufacturer's are working on similar concepts. HP and 3K have them, a rumored HTC device is being designed, and now Dell is coming out with one "soon" (read: eventually- they don't even have the specs available yet, much less what the final price tag will be!).

Bottom line:
I'm not planning on waiting for the next best thing (I'd like to have this before we do any traveling this summer). The Eee serves the purposes that I need, and is available now!

So, back to my challenge- anyone?

I heard Dell is coming out with a copy.

Looks nice!

Anyway Mordy, would you consider a refurb or new only?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I'd rather not, but its definitely an option, as long as its factory refurb.

I've had good experiences buying factory refurbished (like a Dell refurb from the Dell Outlet), but had bad experiences with equipment refurbished by a third party (Had to replace an Aiwa stereo 3x to get one that wasn't broken from some place that refurbished them in Florida).

I saw a refurb eee on geeks.com (evertek.com is their wholesaler and they actually have it $10-$20 less), but I can't tell if its factory refurb or not.

Ok, I'm taking up my own challenge here.
Putting aside the questionable status of the refurb mentioned earlier, this is what I found for a new one:

Buy.com has this:
Asus EEE PC 4G (non Surf) with webcam
- $399

And here's a coupon for 5% off from buy.com:
5% (up to $15 max)

=$384.99 + free shipping.

Then I though I could apply Google checkout and make it 374, but apparently buy.com doesn't allow you to use third party checkout if using this coupon. So, that's the best I've got so far.
Not bad. Any other takers? Dan, I know you've tricks up your white sleeves somewhere...

See, Yitzter, that's an example of a non-helpful post.
This is a challenge, and something of a proof-of-concept (the coupon I posted earlier is good for anything you want to get cheaper, hint hint).

To be perfectly honest, I found a Buy It Now price mistake for this model on ebay about an hour ago - Instead of it being $399, the seller entered it at $299 (like the 2G Surf model, an honest mistake to make). I jumped on it, and saved 1/3 the price.

But I'm still posting here- My point in this is an excersize in deal catching, a game, if you will... do I need to describe what a "challenge" is to people?

Anyway, looks like no one wants to play and I already bought one, so I'll just end it here.
Thanks people.

Its a 4GB Solid State Drive, It's basically a flash drive with no moving parts. It's cooler and uses less power. And it's much faster then traditional Hard Disk Drives.

Well it doesn't have a cd/dvd. It all depends on what you want it for. It doesn't have a lot of storage space. It's pretty portable, if you travel a lot, I can see how you would want it.

Other then that I think it's just a toy people like to have.
