My credit card number was stolen at hotel
« on: December 26, 2018, 10:18:22 AM »
How do you think I should handle this. I’m currently in New Orleans on vacation and staying at a spg/Marriott hotel.  Upon check in I gave the lady who checked us in our spg credit card and license  for incidentals.  She started some conversation with us, then handed our keys and off we went to our room.  30 minutes later a knock on our door from her, handing us back the license and cc which was never returned.  I didn’t think twice, total over sight by her. The next day I get a call from Amex fraud and two charges of $300 was charged in the area at sprint. 1 went through 1 got denied.   I never use this credit card except at spg hotels.  It’s too much of a coincidence that a few hours after my cc was left w front desk that my card number were stolen.  Maybe it wasn’t the lady who checked us in maybe another employee saw the card. I dont know. All I know is , im 99% certain this was stolen from an employee at the hotel.
How do I handle this? Speak w supervisor at hotel? Call Marriott directly?  Any thought appreciated.

Are you trying to get compensated?

I idea. First and most important I want the hotel to be aware of what went down. Playing it back in my head it seems like she knew what she was doing holding onto my card. Secondly, sure. I now am without my spg cc for the remaining trip (not that I use it outside the hotel). If compensation is offered I would gladly take it

No way if you proving it was her for all you know somebody saw it while checking in either way you're not responsible for the charge.

I don't see a reason to ask for compensation.

I would speak to supervisor. They probably have security cameras all over the lobby and desk.

+2 This is a good idea, most hotels have security cameras covering the front desk and lobby.

NOt much to report back here..Its been about 3 weeks and still no word back. When I got back home I spoke with SPG via twitter private DM..they called me right away and took all the details..When they realized the hotel was under the Marriott umbrella they said even though SPG and Marriott are one, its differentt departments and someone from MArriott will be calling me.. Did you get a call, bc I didnt!   I sent MArriott a Dm, nothing..Sent SPG a DM and they said they would tell MArriott to reach out...Today 3 weeks later, MARRIOTT DM'd me and said they are still awaiting a call back from the manager at the hotel.. THIS IS INSANE!   The check in lady likely stole me credit info.  We are Platinum members (not that it should matter)..The customer service has been horrendous!

Why didn't you go directly to the management when you were at the hotel?

A couple of reasons..The main reason, it would have made the rest of our stay very awkward. I dont know for sure who stole my cc info, Im assuming it was the one who checked us in who didnt give us back our cc until 30 min later when she knokced on our door, but I dont know for that it was her... It was Christmas day so didnt want to dapen all the staffs spirits. No clue who the managers were since everyone name tag had a nick name on it (Beer, music, saints etc).  It was a boutique type hotel, so very little private areas..just felt it wold be more comfortable doing it when I got home.

In my opinion, you handled it wrong

1 --when you turn your credit card over to a hotel( anyone or place ) - you  put your faith and trust with them that it will be secure

2. when a negative  event happens do not wait  to get proactive

3. someone "STOLE" from you

I would not wait for them to get back to you, call Marriott Rewards NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE  --Demand a free night in points for the aggravation - and the stress this caused you -- and time you wasted! -- you called a few times to Starwoods- Marriott- Amx -- you I assume called the hotel - Dans etc -- you are the Victim - a thief works at the hotel or the staff is incompetent as AS THEY DID  NOT SECURE YOUR CARD!

I THINK I AM MORE UPSET THEN YOU ARE-LOL!

good luck

your 100% right..It was obviously some scam..She took our license and cc and started chatting with us for a good 5 minutes...30 min later she knocks on our door and was like, "whoops forghot to give it back to you"...8 hours later amex fraud calls...Not only that, our last day at the hotel, our flight wasnt till 830pm...we were scared to leave our bags with the front desk si hung around the lobby for a while...I probbaly shouldve confronted them right away but I didnt...Im more upset that Marriott has not addressed this with any concern

After 3 weeks the manager from the hotel just called..She was quite mad that it took so long for someone from marriott to bring this to her attention..She doesnt even know if the video taps still exist from 3 weeks ago...Anyhow she told me she is depositing 60k marriott points into our account for our troubles..i didnt even ask for anything prob would have asked for our trip to be credited back to us, but i think 60k is fair...I jsut hope they catch the person who stole my cc
