Apples and oranges without knowing details.
There are cruises today that are a fraction of the cost, but aren't as nice, don't make many landings, etc.

Would love to know more details about the previous cruise though.

I now have a renewed skepticism of the "first x in Antarctica" or the "once in a lifetime" comments.

I'm also curious as to whether the price could be had in the 8-9k per person rate that the other cruise had (adjusted for inflation) - I know a large factor was the specific ship's base rate. I wonder if Dan or SF spoke to anyone from the prior cruise to see what could be improved upon.

Did you guys lose landings due to the Falklands detour?

I never advertised this as a first.

9K could be done, without landings though. And without restaurant quality meals, unlimited free wine, scotch, drinks, juice, snacks, etc.

Upthread there's a video for "first siyum in Antarctica". Considering this is at a minimum the 3rd organized trip to go, that claim is [citation needed].

Sailed on a Wednesday. With a minyan.

http://crownheights.info/chabad-news/41707/tanya-printed-on-the-frozen-continent/
Sounds like he had an accidental minyan given the crew he found to be Jewish. And nothing about having a torah onboard, catered food, etc.

I never made that claim, but either way, I'm only counting 2 actual organized cruises. Shouldn't be hard to verify if they did a siyum.

The 1997 cruise had 4 landings and a kosher kitchen

That's a crazy big ship.
Couldn't happen anymore as operators are not allowed to have more than 100 people on land now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_Antarctica

"Occasionally, very large cruise vessels have visited Antarctica carrying over 950 people. These vessels are usually cruise based and offer no landings. However, in 2009, new regulations were enforced that stopped large vessels from operating in Antarctic waters due to their heavier fuel oils. Ships normally can only land 100 people at a time and those that carry over 500 people are not allowed to land anyone."

That's another reason today's cruises are so expensive.

I believe so
My father did not go on that trip, but went the next year (1998). The ship was the same, the Marco Polo, but I'm not sure if the tour operator was the same. There was one other Rabbi on board, not Rabbi Tokayer. He was also a Johannesburg Rabbi who gave shiurim.

So this is the 3rd known kosher Antarctica trip?

Even so, it doesn't detract at all from this trip.

We tend to forget the passuk in koheles. In another generation someone else will organize a “first trip” to Antarctica and someone will dredge up this thread. :)
