He doesn't want to show up in the messages that someone joined. Not just turn off the notifications.

It's a known issue. They've been working on other thing recently, but it's a known issue.

Telegram with the bots and huge groups/channels is certainly much more (fill in the right word...) than WhatsApp.

What do the bots do? How do larger size groups differ from smaller ones that effect their suitability/appropriateness?

Bots are basically websites... You can connect to a bot and get a lot of inappropriate content (and unfortunately there are probably more inappropriate bots than appropriate ones.) The bots are public and are searchable.

Bigger groups (and channels) also make it more of a content delivery system than a social group.

Also with WhatsApp its much harder to remain anonymous.

impossible to filter, also on android u can pretty much do anything on telegram its just like a browser.

Yes. In Israel they have different levels of filters that block videos, images and I hear even VN
