I  think a dedicated Telegram thread is long over due.

Here's my issue. For some reason even when I have great service or connected to WiFi my telegram seems to be constantly "connecting". Even when's it's finnaly done and seems to be working fine, it takes 5 min for a picture to go through. I uninstalled and reinstalled and I'm still having this issue.

Not sure what you mean with which client. It's the direct Telegram app

Try using this:
https://rink.hockeyapp.net/apps/f972660267c948d2b5d04761f1c1a8f3
(this build is the same as stable)

Same issue?

What about with this:
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.thunderdog.challegram

First option worked. Thanks!

What happens with upgrades etc? And is the encryption the same?

Updates should work normally, if not earlier.
Same encryption.

Someone had claimed that any non direct Telegram app is no longer encrypted...

Thanks

Unofficial apps are not trustworthy.
This is official app, with official source, just not the appstore/playstore.

I already disabled "Contact joined Telegram" but I still keep on getting those notifications and they show up in my message feed

Is there any reason to use Telegram rather than the superior Signal?

I already use WhatsApp for anyone who doesn't have other messengers, and that covers everyone not on Signal or Telegram.

Confirmed..  should be fixed in the near future.. it was working a few days ago, they've been doing a lot of server-side updating, that's probably a temporary effect.

Is signal cloud-based?  (No) Does it need a phone to work? (Yes)
Can you send files? (somewhat)
What are the maximum sizes of groups? (10 members).

EDIT:
"Signal also requires that the primary device be an Android or iOS based smartphone with an Internet connection. A desktop app that can link with a Signal mobile client is also available.[9] As of March 2019, Signal's desktop app does not include support for voice or video calling."

Signal has 100mb file size limit, telegram is 1.5gb

Signal has 10-member group limit, Telegram has 200,000.

Lets ask this the other way - if you dont care that some russians may possibly have access to non-secret messages, why would you prefer Signal?

Signal's advantage is its security.

If you don't care for the extra security, you may as well stick with WhatsApp for everything. The features Telegram has that WhatsApp lacks are things the vast majority of people don't care for. Just like some don't care for security, which was Telegram's original claim against WhatsApp.

at some point WhatsApp will be monetized differently and the format will change because that is what Facebook does

What percentage of your contacts have Telegram?

What percentage of your contacts have WhatsApp?

And how many of your Telegram contacts don't have WhatsApp?
