Health Insurance Master Thread
« on: January 01, 2019, 12:17:21 PM »
I guess there is no main thread for all Heath Insurance questions. (Not Obama care or jersey care)

I have horizon blue cross and I just got this letter in the mail with a $1200 check. What does it mean?

I mean have personal health insurance (not from the company) paid for by your pre tax salary.

Starting a new job in October. My current employer says that my current health insurance coverage ends on the last day of the month in which I terminate employment (so Oct 31). My new employer's health coverage starts from my start date (mid Oct). Does this mean I have overlapping health insurance coverage for the ~2 weeks at the end of October? Can I legally submit reimbursement to both companies for medical expenses incurred during the overlap? If no, then which is "primary"?

A PPO and an HMO are two very different types of coverage. A PPO will generally not require referrals and will allow for out of network benefits. An HMO is only in-network coverage and will usually require referrals from a Primary Care Physician for any specialist visit.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

It really depends on your specifics. Before they merged, GHI was the absolute worst company to deal with, even though in theory they had an extensive network in NY. HIP was decent for what they were. I haven't sold any of them in many years, until recently I've had a few individual (as opposed to group, which was pre Obamacare business) clients that chose Emblem for whatever reason. Since your inquiring, I guess you are in a group coverage situation. It boils down to what works best for you.

I've been told ghi is generally better but it seems to have higher copay than hip : 15 vs 10 etc, doesn't cover emergency room not sure if that's accurate? Yes part of a group and can switch to ghi if i want..

GHI being offered to you is a PPO, which includes out of network benefits, and will not require a referral in network, that will come either at a higher monthly premium or with higher co-pays and deductibles, as it's a richer product than an HMO. My personal experience from many years ago with HIP was that by the time they gave an approval to see a specialist, it was time-limited, and the earliest appointment available was after the approval expired. We managed to work it out eventually, but it wasn't fun. A PPO doesn't require referrals.
