To say it nicely, some of them have no clue, while unfortunately others are straight out dishonest.

I dont know the author at all, but he seems to be a Mocher who has written a piece defending their business practices. It appears that he may have never studied the halachos, which is another issue entirely. Opening a Judaica shop does not grant one any amount of halachic knowledge, and def not smicha in anything. The proprietor is at the mercy of his suppliers, and just parrots "this is kosher lechatchia, this is hidur level one, two, three..." the same way he sells silver.

I can't talk about dealers outside of Crown Heights, but I know the dealers in Crown Heights personally (more or less), and my personal observation of them definitely plays a role in the trust I have in their word!

Going back to the original issue brought up in this thread, it was all about a different class of Mezuzos, referred to as Mivtzoim Mezuzos. This has nothing to do with mezuzos sold to Anash for personal use.

I wouldn't blindly trust a dealer I don't know (or have someone I know vouching for him).

Indeed. And I trust certain dealers with mivtzoim level mezuzos, knowing what they are (though I would personally go a step higher even for mivtzoim, and might sponsor the difference myself from my maaser money if I felt it made a difference).
