Here’s another hack - when considering Spirit vs another airline, add in the cost of a bottle of water, baggage and whatever else you typically expect. If it’s not worth the savings don’t fly Spirit. Otherwise, take spirit and enjoy the bottle of water knowing you already paid for it at time of booking.

The problem is when things go wrong.. if spirit was just a regular airline just they cut back and charge for water this thread wouldn't exist.

That's why you don't fly Spirit to save $20 after accounting for incidentals. You fly them when the savings are significant enough to take that risk.

Bring an empty water bottle past security and fill it in the terminal. Voila, water on the flight.

Why empty?
I always have mine 1/2 filled with ice.

Fill it with a Fiji water bottle from the PP bar.

Tips: When flying with a lap child, Spirit requires you to see an agent so they can verify the child's age (and then make an additional attempt to collect bag fees). They may even require a birth certificate to confirm the age. However, it seems it is possible to check in via the Spirit app and receive boarding passes.

Also, when flying with young children they allow you to board anytime which then allows you to board together with Zone 1 where they don't normally examine bags (zone 1 is for those with paid carry-on). YMMV
