Any experience regarding the need of an international drivers permit (IDP) in Italy?
Taking from Noleggiare in MXP. (If anyone has general experience with them it’s also appreciated.)
Btw any recommend attractions in the area?

+ 1 for locarno. absolutely beautiful and relaxing.

we stayed in Milan (for purposes of staying in PH Milan and food) and did day trips - one day to como, one day to stresa (islands there) and one day to locarno.
I highly recommend getting the lonely planet italian lakes book for ideas

Can you please elaborate on stresa?
 Which attractions are interesting? Thanks!

Stresa is beautiful.
If you're in Locarno go to the Island of Brissago (beautiful) whuch belonged to a Jew and was "sold" to the swiss government in 1940
In Como next to the Duomo (church) notice a street's name :Contrada degli Ebrei"  the street of the Jews.

From Wikipedia:

Max Emden

In 1926, Hamburg department store magnate Max Emden purchased the islands, demolished the existing house and replaced it with a Palazzo style villa, designed by the Berlin architect Alfred Breslauer.[1][2][3] The villa had 24 rooms, a conservatory and a 33-metre-long Roman-style bathing pool.[2] While not interested in botany and gardening, Emden preserved the existing garden and vegetation, undertaking the necessary maintenance. Emden lived on the islands until his death in a clinic in Locarno in 1940.[4][2]

Purchase by the public

In 1949, Emden's son Hans Erich, who had emigrated to Chile accepted an offer from a consortium consisting of the Canton Ticino, the municipalities of Ascona, Brissago and Ronco sopra Ascona, plus the Swiss Nature Protection League (known today as the Swiss Heritage Society) to purchase the islands.[2] The purchase agreement was signed on 2 September 1949.[4]

On the morning of 2 April 1950 the Brissago Islands were opened to the public.

A USA license doesn't require an IDP
