Paying for seats together on Air Canada from Tel Aviv

My wife and I are flying from Dallas to Tel Aviv via Toronto. In order to guarantee seats together we can either reserve in advance ($65) or wait until 24 hours before and take our chances. I am not sure if the flight is full or not, but as of now (4 weeks before the flight) not all the seats are reserved.

Is it worth reserving in advance? Is there some other way to get seats together without paying?

In most cases check-in agents will make the attempt to seat you together, or if that's not possible (rarely) you can always ask to switch with someone once on board.
