Payroll services for very small business
« on: January 27, 2019, 04:00:10 PM »
Hi, I'm a very small business (S corp with 1 employee -- myself). Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap payroll service? I'd been using Xero but they stopped offering payroll and are now partnered with Gusto. The cheapest services, including Gusto, all seem to be around ~$40/mo for just 1 employee. Is there any significantly cheaper solution besides DYI, which I'm not willing to do. Thank you!

Did you ask your CPA?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I don't have a "CPA" and do mostly everything myself. My brother is a CPA and he set me up on Xero a couple years ago, and he thinks all the payroll services are going to be about the same price as Gusto.

Square payroll is $29 +$5 per employee per month, that’s $34, not significantly cheaper than $40 but comes with lots of perks

Cool looks good.
Just a little too expensive...
We have 40-50 employees and we pay $49 base price and $2 per employee.

https://wagepoint.com/pricing.php?r=US

or

https://www.patriotsoftware.com/payroll/

Or look at other options here: https://www.fundera.com/blog/payroll-services-for-small-business

If you're OK doing your own payroll and just need software to do the calculations and forms for you, you might want to consider https://medlin.com/

Thanks! No, I don't want to do anything myself. I want the site to make all the payments (Fed + CA), forms, etc. w/o me having to worry about it.

Wagepoint would be [$20+2 = $22]x2 = $44 (Am I right that the $20 plan is PER PAYROLL which I find rather sleazy and tricky, when other sites list it PER MONTH?). Patriot would be $30+4=$34 (the $10 plan doesn't do the taxes), it seems.

That seems correct. I don't have any personal experience, just information I found online.

Though I can't really figure how

Medlin isn't hard to use IME.

Actually I edited re Wagepoint and you might not have seen my edits.

Am I reading that right with Wagepoint?

You seem to be correct about Wagepoint fees, but I personally don't find it sleazy or tricky. As a matter of fact, charging per payroll, rather than per month seems to make sense, as a monthly fee is totally arbitrary, versus a per payroll fee that makes sense.

If you use quickbooks, you might just want to add their payroll service.

How about this. You might even ask a DDFer to visit their HQ and check them out.

That's wild, never heard of it, looks very interesting
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

I use it. Under 25 employees its free.
There is a small charge for them to handle the withholdings.

I've been using them for 2-3 years with no issues.

Its free, but they have 2 "add-ons" that cost $12.50 a month.
1 - Have them file and pay the taxes
2 - Have them set up direct deposit for your payroll.

I use 1 and not 2.

Very nice, thanks for your help!

I will probably start using this.

Over a year.
No.
Response times to email can lag for a day or 2. Phone customer service is pretty decent though. (Only had to contact them several times)
