If only. Forced to do so by the EU. Rumors were that they'd rather give up on a wired connection than concede, but I guess the tech wasn't up to speed on that.

They already gave up wired headphones, so getting rid of a charging cable makes sense, however I believe the EU, and maybe a country in South America- though I don't remember which one- require that if a piece of technology is being sold, it needs to include the ability to charge itself. So they would have to include the charging brick or wireless charger that plugs in, and they won't do that.
