My brother is on a EL-Al flight right now into Newark, he was part of a group of kids from Chai Lifeline they let all the kids into the cockpit midflight! Normal? I am blown away!

My father in law knew several pilots on Malev, the defunct Hungarian airline. He was invited into cockpit midflight to shmooze and was told to be quiet only when they had to make radio transmissions.

A friend of mine was invited into the cockpit via the stewardess,  to shmooze with the pilot who he had  become friendly with before the flight. Don’t remember which airlines, but it was to China.

Before 9.11 this was standard.  I have been in many domestic and international.  It's been quite a while ago. If you get in these days in USA it would be against FAA guidelines.

Airlines that aren't based in the US, seem to be more lax in this area. I'd assume it's because it's the FAAs things. I was just on a flight where the pilot came out and didn't bother to close the door behind him. I think it's mainly US airlines that really are makpid on this.

In my flight down to USH I went to use the restroom and the cockpit door was open and when the crew saw me they closed the door (there was an FA there chatting around)

The pilots and an GA was sitting there and shmoozing with the door open, if I wouldn't have passed then it would have stay open longer. When pilots usually exit an FA will block the path and they close the door right behind them and don't keep it open.

Correct, almost every flight I've been on they close the aisle with a food cart and the pilot comes out,

Not my experience with aeromexico last month. Pilot came out to return his meal tray and use the bathroom, and didn't really give much care for the door while schmoozing with the stewardess. Don't think the door was ever locked either.
