Hands down the UE Boom2
Own 4 of them and they all pair to each other. Have used the JBL flip2 doesn't compare.

How many of these are needed for a dining room with about 40-50 people?
If you don't care why would you comment?

2 Should be fine if you have one on each side paired.
3 even better...
I'm used to hearing 3-4 at once.

Now a dilemma: do I buy 2-3 of these for $100 each, or rent a 1000 watt speaker for $75-100 for the night?
If you don't care why would you comment?

So I've decided to buy something, want to spend $100-150.

I need it for an indoor party with about 50 guests. Hard to know exactly what specifications to look for. I read through this list: https://www.outeraudio.com/party-speakers/

Here are some in the price range, in addition to the ones listed upthread. Would like something I can put on a stand. Any recommendations?

LyxPro SPA-8 Compact 8" Portable PA System 100-Watt RMS Power Active Speaker Equalizer Bluetooth SD Slot USB MP3 XLR 1/4" 1/8" 3.5mm Inputs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MX3OO1S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iyPJCbPMB9V4Q

Alphasonik 15" Powered 2800W PRO DJ Amplified Loud Speaker Bluetooth USB SD Card AUX MP3 FM Radio PA System LED Ring Karaoke Feature Mic (Main Monitor, Band, Church, Party, Guitar Amp) w/ Tripod Stand https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BZ4PUS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QzPJCbPDPGP79

Get with the times. Significant difference between the flip 2 to 3, and also from the 3 to 4

JBL is definitely loud, JBL=Junky But Loud.

Noone said not , when comparing the Ueboom to the JBL 2 it's no comparison, while the 3 and 4 are nice but I would still take the ue boom over those JBL speakers.
I've had the JBL flip 2 for quite some time and it's still running strong never bother upgrading it as I got the UE boom which I'm happy with.

I read that you want 5 watts per person indoors and 10 watts per person outdoors. Any truth to that?

Well music played indoors is surrounded by the walls which would keep the sound limited to the room, while music played outside doesn't bounce off anything, which would require the volume to be louder for the same 50 people outdoors vs indoors which would be fine.
Didn't know they require x amount of wattage per person!

What I am trying to say is that the flip 2 looks and feels junky. The flip 4 is much better. Completely different speaker.

Looking to buy a JBL speaker for my kitchen. Are there any updated recommendations?

Here are the ones I see when looking on Amazon:

Flip 5 - $90
Flip 6 - $105
Charge 4 - $100
Charge 5 - $140
Extreme 2 - $200

Any insight would be helpful
