Will be grateful if anyone can help . An elderly family friend is trying to locate and visit a village her mother was born in, that would be in December 1914. She needs to find out in what country was this jewish village in 1914 and what country is it in now?
What I understood from her is this was a jewish village on the borders of Poland and Ukraine, she thinks in 1914 it might have been part of the Austro Hungarian empire, but not sure.

To the best I understand from her spelling, the village was called Gusatin or Gusyatino , if anyone can read Russian here is the name in Russian that she gave me гусятино

Thanks for any help.

"On August 9, 1914, the Russian Army crossed the Zabrotz River and attacked Austria through Gusyatin. Fires in the town destroyed more than 600 buildings. The Jews dispersed among neighboring towns and villages to avoid the oncoming armies. Many died from typhus as local conditions deteriorated. Jews were ordered out of Gusyatin in on June 13, 1915, but many made their way back into the town. When the Russian Army retreated in 1916, the remaining Jews were ordered into exile again, this time to the Kiev district of Russia. Raids from peasant gangs plagued the few Jews that returned to the town after the war in 1918 to 1919. Then the Bolsheviks came to power and confiscated property from Jewish-owned businesses. By 1921, the Jewish population had declined to 368, less than 10 percent of the peak population in 1890."  http://jewua.org/husiatyn/

Thank you so much. So currently it is in Ukraine, and in 1914 or before 1918 was it part of Poland, Austria or Hungary?

Great info, thank you . Looking at the dates it shows c 1900 before the war Austrian Empire  and c 1930 as Poland. So if she was born in December 1914 would you say it was in the Austrian Empire or Poland?

Austria. Unless it was after July 1914, when WW1 began. After July 1914 the war began, and there were few, if any, records kept.
Once the war was over, from about 1918, Husiatyn was under Poland.
