Series of Stupid Mistakes - Help Appreciated
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:55:08 PM »
i want to preface this by saying that i know the following is due to negligence on my part, i just really hope this can be a learning experience for me without it biting this much...
last week on DDMS there was an incredible roundtrip deal to Iceland for 17k Chase Sapphire Reserve points on Delta. I grabbed two seats without properly consulting a jewish calendar. as i wanted to travel right after sukkos, i consulted the Google Hador which proclaimed Sunday evening October 20 to be the end of the Sukkot festival. figuring isru chag is monday, october 21, i booked the morning flight with a return the following Sunday October 27. it was only after 24 hours had passed that i remembered to check the itinerary to make sure that all is well, which is when i realized that i booked travel on Simchas Torah. i immediately called Chase and spent over two hours wiht the supervisor on the phone with him going back and forth with Delta trying to change or cancel the flights. they conceded with allowing me to  change the flight for a change fee of $50 plus the difference in fees. at first i figured ill just change the outgoing flight to the 23rd, but soon realized that Delta doesnt operate that route on Tuesday or Wednesday. changing to a different date entirely would cost me over $500 per passenger. tried calling again, but there are already notes on the itinerary regarding allowing a change, but refusing a cancellation. anyhow, long story short is there anything left for me to do.

Your best bet at this stage is to try calling delta directly and explain how you acccidently booked on your holiday(jewish holiday) and that I would change it to Tues or wed, but then realized that you don't fly and.. Clear and with a reasoning should do the trick. Hatzlacha!
Being that there's already notes on your chase account you would need a supervisor who would speak on their own behalf and not the notes behalf.

Do the fare rules allow for cancellation for a fee? If under $150 and you would pay for  points go for it, otherwise just swallow the loss, I know it sucks but at the end of the day it’s only 34k. I once lost $600 to a Friday flight if that makes you feel better ;)

its a basic economy flight so no cancellations allowed...

To better understand, when booking a ticket through the chase portal what play does chase have here?
When you need to adjust the ticket who'd you speak to? Call delta directly? Or chase?

Was saying how speaking to a regular representative many times will be a waste of a phone call as all they see in front of them is the noted for this flight and won't budge, while a supervisor some times will speak on they're own behalf.

Any chance you can upgrade your ticket to a higher class which would now give you the option to cancel for free or even a fee?

Just wait for a schedule change and then cancel / rebook for free. Odds are in your favor given how far in advance you booked.

is there any chance such a change will happen weeks or if not months before the fight or only a few days before a fight?

Chase is the agent. I doubt basic economy is eligible for upgrade but tx for idea. I'll certainly try

I feel your pain as I made this same mistake years ago.
Googling Jewish holidays cost me $650 or so to change a RT flight.

did you try direct with the airline? As far as I understood Chase has no personal interest in the matter they're just following the airlines ru les
