Dental and Vision Insurance and Plans
« on: March 05, 2019, 12:28:20 AM »
What options are worth considering regarding potentially obtaining dental and/or vision insurance or a discount plan?

Is it worth obtaining altogether rather than simply paying out of pocket as you need services, if you only expect to need the standard twice a year dental examination and cleaning and possibly x-rays? If you do need additional services does the insurance or plans offer significant discounts?

What are the differences or benefits between choosing an insurance plan versus choosing a discount plan?

Which carriers and plans are best?

I don't think it's worth it. Unlike medical insurance, these plans typically only cover very basic treatment and anything more expensive is on you. My job offers 'full medical, dental and vision' but I know the dental and vision plans are garbage, not even worth the $19 a month that I would need to pay. I opt out and instead pay for these things out of pocket.

In general, I like to think of insurance as being for the big expenses I cannot otherwise afford. That cannot be said about dental and vision insurance. I think it's just a offered so companies can brag that they offer full medical dental and vision when in fact it's basically worthless. Of course other can disagree.

I would say exactly opposite in my experience, at least with dental. For a few bucks a month (literally), you get most of the dental expenses covered with a very small copay and deductible. If only medical insurance was so cheap.

100% agree. Also, it's negotiated rates so they can only charge you like 60-80 bucks for a cleaning.

Fidelity Health (not to be confused with Fidelis medical insurance) - This is a great dental plan, do your research pricewise - have this for a while now & covers lots more than other plans (approx. half the cost or less - paying $850 now for Root Canal instead of $1800), paying $220/yr. for couple, excellent choice of dentists. Agent is a Mr. Shraga E. Klein who has the patience of a saint & answers all questions, follows up if dentist was able to accommodate in timely manner & follows up with office on your behalf, etc would highly recommend. Contact # (718) 871-2882 / (845) 783-4537. I may be mistaken but it's possible it's for the tri-state / upstate NY area only.

Alternatively, this isn't too bad either:

Good luck.
