Hawaii housing for 5 near Honolulu?
« on: March 05, 2019, 04:19:46 PM »
Hello everyone,
I used some SWA miles to book 5 r/t tix to Honolulu for next month!
Great deal & perfect timing!
Now to find housing for 5 nights.
Any tips on reasonable hotels, Air B&B's, etc?
Also need rent-a-car.
Thank you so much for everyone's help!
Anyone need passes to Hollywood Magic Castle, let me know!
Thanks!

Are you set on staying in Oahu and not going to another island?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Why would you stay on Oahu at all?
Complete waste of money and precious time in Hawaii.

I found the Aston Waikiki Sunset for 5 at $675.75 for 5 nights.
Anyone have experience there or no of better value?
This is for MON-SAT in early April.  Thx for the help!

Thank you for your considerate post.
The kids have never been to Hawai'i so we can hit another island next time.
On Oahu we can see North Shore, Hanauma Bay, climb Diamon Head, Arizona Memorial, etc.
4 full days, 5 nights.  I don't think enough to hit 2 islands.

I think Dan and Co are suggesting you visit a different island for the ENTIRE trip.

Understood but our SWA flight already booked to Honolulu & most likely most people have visited Oahu once in addition to other islands.

And I regret it to this day. The first thing everyone does when they get to Oahu is get on a plane to a different Island. Skip it. Maui, Kauai, The Big Island. It is just another 45 minutes.

Waikiki is nasty. Miami Beach is much nicer.

Don't listen to the naysayers if you've already made plans.  Waikiki is extremely touristy, less relaxing than the other islands, but there is loads to do.  You will not be bored.

Thx, but it seems nobody has any suggestions on housing on Oahu.
There's plenty for us to do for 4 full days there:  North Shore, climbing Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, SCUBA offshore on sunken wrecks, etc.
Next time we'll do another island.  We'll look at Air B&B, etc.  Thx.

Lived on Oahu for 3 years, seriously, go to any other island! There's plenty to do, for sure, it's just not nearly as fun to do any of it with the trash and graffiti everywhere, even remote trailheads, the meth addicts living on the beaches, or the horrendous traffic, just to name three delightful things about Oahu. The place is a dump, and the rest of the islands so nice, it's almost criminal to waste your 5 days in Hawaii there.
But, if you insist, there are some reasonable VRBO/AirBnB houses on the North Shore and the North Shore is the least crappy part of the island, so highly recommend that. Whatever you do stay away from the Waianie coast, if you drive by Ko Olina you've gone too far!

Thx everyone for comments.  I'll check Air B&B & the usual web sites tonight & book something as we're 3.5 weeks out.  It would be nice to find housing that includes parking but that's probably not likely.  Probably do some off shore SCUBA too.  Thx.

Pretty much everything on the North Shore will have parking. Less likely Waikiki. There are only 2 real reef sites to dive on in Oahu and one is, no joke, the outlet of the big power plant on the Island where stuff is growing on the warmer coolant water. Did I mention the island-wide landfill is right next to it, as well as a refinery? Again, gorgeous island (not!). There are some interesting wrecks to dive.

We've been to all 4 islands, and while Oahu is definitely more crowded//busy, with kids we had a really good time there, as there was a lot to do, especially for the first time there - Aquarium, Zoo, Diamondhead, North Shore (including PCC), Kualoa Ranch, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbour, etc. We stayed at the Embassy Suites (used Hilton points) which is 1 minute from the beach, and every room is at least a 1 bedroom (we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom which was amazing with little kids). They also have free breakfast with a lot of Kosher food, and free happy hour. Parking was expensive, but that's everywhere in Waikiki. Oahu Kosher was also great as prices are very reasonable for Hawaii and they deliver to your hotel for a small fee ($5-$10 I think). Our last day there we stayed at the Courtyard North Shore for a night, just because it was connected to the PCC. Hotel was really nice for a Courtyard by Marriott (pool nicer than most Courtyards), but I wouldn't want to stay there more than a day or 2 as there's not too much going on there and there are no balconies, and even our ocean view had some power lines in the way. Kauai is still our favorite island, Maui probably 2nd, but with our small kids had a great time on Oahu as well. For relaxation and less people and commotion, the other islands are all better.
