I doubt that it was compensation. Was probably refund from biz to economy.

Happening all over. Bumped in to a friend in shull today who reminded me how he was bumped to economy while he was flying with 4 little children! He tried asking how they could separate a family with little kids, to no ears. I had to get the Matmid AH who was a TP member to call and tell them that he is not flying elal anymore if they are bumped which resolved the issue.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough but as I said after the TP member called in they put him back in to biz. Just wanted to point out how they were ready to split up a family with small children. Im sending email today. Will update when I hear back. (reg my story of the other thread)

We gotta talk

a. Why do they officially overbook their planes?

b. When they officially overbook why don't they look for volunteers?

c. Why won't they bother to do anything a little complicated in order to make things work? For example, switching a pax from jfk flight who is willing to volunteer from biz to economy to accommodate 75 year old lady from Newark plane being bumped. (explained in detail on other post)

And last, compensation. In airport they for sure don't offer. They don't even apologize. They just say sorry you're first on list to be bumped take it or leave it. I would guess when you email customer relations you will get a stunning $300 cert to use on elal flights..

Another thing they gotta be asked, when the pax buys a revenue tkt why is she still forced to be bumped like it was in my case? My pax paid Z class biz while there were probably a dosen other people booked in the cheaper J fare. And she was still the one forced to downgrade

They very frequently offer me to downgrade to Y in exchange of a round trip ticket in J. Never forced me to.
It was always on flights to TLV. Happened to me ex LHR, BOS, LAX etc

Just a random thought - TP get a guaranteed seat in J as long as they book 24h before the flight and if they book a C fare (this will soon become 48h).

From what I've heard, if J is full they call a few passengers to seek for volunteers for alternate flights / class. Alternatively I'm pretty sure they bumped people a check in.

Happens mainly ex TLV by night flight when one is delayed etc

Updating here:
I emailed ELAL for compensation stating that Qantas was giving me a hard time about refunding me, and that ELAL should compensate me. They replied with an offer of $500 cash. I responded to that offer that i should be getting more than that for obvious reasons. Now their response is this:
"...As we have kindly explained in our previous email we don't have any way of determining the amount of points used to issue your ticket. Therefore, we consider it reasonable to offer you the amount paid for denied boarding compensation according to the Israeli Aviation Services Law. The amount paid for flights over six hours is 860 USD..."

I would obviously like to get more than the $860 offered, but don't know how to go about it.
